Looking to change the current family wagon to an Octavia VRS estate early next year.
All of my last 6 cars (other than my previous TVR) have been diesel.....
Leaning more towards petrol as they have a bit more power, which ever I get it will be a manual gear box.
I do around 16k a year.

So do I go petrol or diesel?
Leaning more towards petrol as they have a bit more power, but the diesels arrear to be cheaper, whichever I get it will be a manual gear box.

I do around 16k a year.

Only you can answer that, diesel probably makes more sense.
A remap livens them up if you want a bit more poke.

I went from having 4 diesels in a row to getting a petrol VRS and do about 25K miles a year, well I did until this year!

It was great to get back in to a petrol and won't be going back to diesel again, yes it is costing more in fuel but is much more enjoyable to drive and on a long run at a steady pace it will still do just over 40mpg.

Generally a remap is around £400.

Thanks for that - my current diesel only does mid 40's on mpg, so having a petrol that does similar will be OK.

I've got a petrol 245 estate (albeit DSG) and can confirm 40mpg+ is easily achieved. The petrol has a useful amount of extra power over the diesel too!

I’ve got a 220 petrol, DSG, don’t do many long journeys and MPG seems to be stuck in the low 30’s using Super Unleaded (Sainsbury’s mainly). It’s never truly felt like it needed “livening up”, same for a 230 hp one I had as a loan once.

You're probably in the bracket where diesel will save you money over the petrol variant, but the petrol will be the more fun car to drive.

The 2.0 TSI engine is reliable, quick and surprisingly frugal when on longer runs though. For me, diesel only exists to save you money when doing big miles. 16k isn't actually that much and i reckon the cost savings will be more prominent when doing more like 20k+

I have a 2010, petrol manual estate. Great car. Never really goes below about 32/33 mpg even hooning it and local. They "feel" better as a petrol imho, nothing quantifiable but it matters to me!

Petrol, unless you're doing 10s of thousands of miles a year on a motorway.

Did you ever find one?

I’m definitely after a petrol as less than 5k a year but VRS Octavia estates seem to be like hens teeth at the moment!!

Get a hatchback version instead.... the boots are enormous enough as it is.

Didn't have a VRS but had to get in the boot of my Octavia every time I needed to hoover it haha.

I have a Rapid now, even the boot on that is big for the class car it is. Definitely wouldn't recommend the 1.2TSI though... it's slow af and only gets around 45mpg.

The petrol estates are extremely rare. I got one in the end but it took me a while to find a blue one I can tell you haha!

Oh great that bodes well! It’s definitely petrol over diesel and estate over saloon for me.

I’m not as fussed on colour (except no silver) but the interior trim can be a little garish in some

I have the diesel manual, and I would say go petrol DSG biggrin .

Having had DSG and Manual Octavias, I prefer DSG in this type of car. With active cruise / DSG combo is great if you are up and down the country regularly.

I have a tuning box that allegedly gives the same power as petrol, and the difference wasn't totally amazing if I am honest so diesel would be fine.... that said I am skeptical about the power claims for my tuning box. But still, would go for petrol.

I had a diesel vrs estate (in blue, the fastest colour) until recently. It was a 2011 manual variant.

The day its warranty expired it went straight to Revo for a stage 1 map, and lived with that for another 6 years until I got traded it in last month. I'd recommend it, a good 20% hike in both torque and power. The only parts I needed to replace in 90k miles were the front brake pads, which cost £40.

It was a great car to live with, enough performance and if you'd really have to put effort in to get under 42/43mpg.

I chose the manual because the DSG of that generation felt lethargic and dim-witted. I have the DSG in my current Cupra Leon, and it's brilliant in comparison, the outcome of years of development. I'd recommend trying both if its an older model you're after, but go for the DSG on the more recent iterations.

I'd choose the petrol if buying another, at about 12k miles a year. The torque is great, but with the DSG it wouldn't really matter, and the petrol is going to be faster, quieter, and less likely to fall foul of future legislation*.

My only real criticism of the car was the cabin noise, the wind and tyre noise was too much, you couldn't hear the kids talking in the back. It would crash and bang over road bumps too. It's a factor of being that end of the VAG range, they don't sound proof it as much. Having driven plenty of other brands I couldn't go back to Skoda with the noise. Everything else about it was spot on though.

I'm sure one will turn up, I found mine on PH and the guy lived literally around the corner from my parents.

Mine has averaged 33.5mpg according to the onboard computer which will be largely down to my short commute but regularly see 45+ on longer runs.

Point to note is that the touch screens/ infotainment can be affected pretty heavily by cold weather as I found out to my cost living in the far north!

I do less than 5k a year with lots of short journeys so MPG isn’t an issue and is the reason for the choice of petrol. I’ve been driving an Alfa V6 rather leaden footed for 6 years so anything will be an improvement
