Hello,

I am considering purchasing a used four year old VW from a VW dealership under their Approved Used scheme. Before I visit the dealership I have asked that they provide me with the service history.

The first PDF they sent through was a short summary of service history which, for the first two services (at annual intervals) just lists 'Inspection Service'. The third is listed as 'Oil Change Service'. On face value, I was a bit concerned about what the 'Inspection Service' included as wanted to make sure it hadn't gone 3 years without an oil change and so asked them to provide me with further details. It's age means that (apparently) there is no physical log book.

They've sent through invoices of each service (with previous owner's details blanked out). For the first two 'Inspection Services' the invoice mostly just lists 'Carried out 20,000 Mile Service (covered under the service plan)'. There is no product break down on this covering any oil or filters, which there is for the third one.

Is anyone with a VW able to shed light on whether this is usual/to be expected? I am hoping that it essentially just means that for the first two years it was covered under a service plan which meant that it had oil and filter changes as per that plan, but wanted to check that this isn't some signal that a very skeleton servicing schedule has been kept.

Any help much appreciated.

Unfortunately, I have to report that VW did the absolute minimum during the time my wife's Polo was under warranty and a service plan. They seemed to only do an oil and filter change at every service regardless of the mileage, also their PDC was poor and they had it back many times to put things right. I now have it serviced by a good independant whom I trust after many years with him, once he was presented with the Polo he had to do quite a major service as many items had not been done. I spent a lot of time at the VW dealer getting compensation which eventually came, but it took an interview with the CEO of the dealership to get a result. My advice is avoid them like the plague their reputation precedes them; just look up a VW forum.

Hi CJB,

Many thanks for the reply. I have decided not to go ahead and see the car (not wholly related to the service history) but good to get some context on VW....
