Audi S8 V10. Should I...??
Discussion
I have a readers ride thread on my S6 V10 on here.
Drivetrain is very similar to the S8.
I love it - it’s not “fast” though. Most modern hot hatches will be as quick/quicker. Awesome noise and refined though.
Couple of bits to watch out for:
Service the gearbox
Spark plugs / coil packs. Not expensive individually but they add up when doing 10.
Suspension - heavy powerful car. It’s hard on the suspension components and most are unique to the S - the S8 may be different as it may have air?
Intake manifold and carbon cleaning is the biggy.
It will need a carbon clean - a proper intake manifold off and scrub it job. A good day or twos work. Can make around 50-100hp difference!
Intake manifold has runner flaps that are plastic and will break after around 100k part is £3.3k from Audi. You can pick them up for about tonight £1.2k though. Other option is to remove the manifold and the flaps and then map it out. You will lose either torque or top end power though depending on if you want to set them as “open” or “closed”. Symptoms are a rattle coming from the top of the engine. You will want to get it done as the flaps can fall off and work their way past the valves.
Overall though it’s a pretty unstressed engine - other than those above it’s the usual 10 year old car electrical gremlins and things you would get with any similar age car. A decent diagnostic tool is a godsend. Mine has around 110k and is still lovely. No creaks or rattles and interior is as new. Infotainment gives away the age but the stereo is great and I understand even better in the S8 (I have Bose but think the S8 came with “1 better”)
Any specific questions I’m happy to help but not sure on any specific S8 issues
