Hi all,
Merry Christmas to you 😎
Had a few sherries and the talk of new cars came up this afternoon.
Currently running a Porsche 996 C4 and while it’s served me well, I’m bored.
I only do about 5k per year. Shameful, I know, but that’s how it is.
So I’ve been looking at new toys. C63 AMG was an option, but the car needs to be a daily driver, in the countryside and all weathers.
So I was actually looking at the S5, and saw for not much more, the RS5 is a viable option.
Not seem much (recent) stuff on here though. Avoid?
Big ole money pit?
FYI I had a b5 s4 a few years back, and was registered on rs246.com, so knew about the cr@ppy suspension issues a la RS6, and the v8 coking issues on the RS4....
I assume they’ve been fixed now....?
Would be interested to hear from anyone about them.
And yes, mindful that the drive will be very different to the Porsche.
Cheers,
Dan

I've use to own a S5. Fab car! If was a 4.2v8. Friends of mine had the RS5. The styling on the RS is obviously more pleasing however I didn't think performance was significantly better. The running costs were higher on the RS due to cost of brakes. I think my friend paid over 2k for brakes and pads. I paid more like £500 if I recall correctly. You may want to check that stuff out!
Either way both are great cars in different ways. They are not out right sports cars but are sporty and comfortable cruisers. Nothing will compare to the Porsche.
I have a Cayenne Turbo. It's a comfortable car and works well with the family. I do miss the S5 and would be returning back to a coupe for my next car. Not sure what just right now.

I recently bought a new RS4. Only just finished running it in and impressed so far. I considered the RS5, but the depreciation put me off. They share the same engine, power output and are a similar weight. But the RS4 certainly seems to hold value better.
I got a decent deal too. Got a carbon black edition with over £10k off the list.

Must be losing at least a grand a month?I got a decent deal too. Got a carbon black edition with over £10k off the list.

An RS5 might, the RS4 won’t. But who knows how the market will go. Given I paid £10k under list, I’m hoping that’ll compensate for some of the depreciation. 2 year old models are going for £50-55k and given I’ve got the carbon black edition and paid £65k, I think I’ll be unlucky to lose £1k a month.FredFlacht said:

Ok £700-800 thenI’d do it if I could lose that easily

If I lose £15k over 2 years that’s £625 a month. I’m happy with that. It’s a decent car and I paid cash, so not paying any interest on finance.
I am 2.5 years into my B9 RS4 and I wish you luck that you manage "just" 7.5k per annum depreciation. I think it will be more than that. The bigger the discount off RRP, the faster they fall

Great cars though, and do indeed hold their value better than the RS5.

You are probably right when the trade price is factored in. I had a Macan Turbo previously, but was disappointed with that after having a GTS. Lost £15k on the Turbo after 10 months of ownership. The bigger the discount off RRP, the faster they fall

I’ve always wanted an Audi RS and the power unit in the RS4/5 is the same as the Macan Turbo, but the car is 200kg lighter. I haven’t had a chance to really give it some welly yet, as I’ve only just run it in, but things look promising.

As it’s my thread and question.........
That's not quite how threads on PH work, but back to OT..The B9 RS4/5 is a very fast car, and well put together. DRC gives better ride and handling but standard car is a good compromise too. But DRC can still cause issues as more complex than standard so more to go wrong, but way better than early systems. I have it and love it. No engine issues (other than faulty thermostat module in earlier cars).
I prefer the 4 which is amazing mix of performance and practicality. Economical (relatively) too.
Insurance cheap for what it is.
The best generation RS4/5 yet (and I have had a few). Indeed I traded in a C7 RS6 for mine.

Tip: if you have DRC, run it in Auto for best compromise of ride and handling. I run engine/box in Comfort and pull gear lever back for Sport when I need faster response (eg overtaking) as Comfort is more relaxing and you are never short of torque. Steering is best in Comfort too with diff set to Sport. Enjoy! And each to their own anyway.

Cheers for the reply. Yeh been on PH for many many years, so know the “quirks” of this site (warts and all) hence trying to keep it on track 👍 The B9 RS4/5 is a very fast car, and well put together. Handy to know about the reliability aspect. Will need to go and check one out

These all depreciate. Once the "latest version" syndrome has fully worn off (likely starting now if they're "10k off list"
) they'll follow the same curve as the B8 and B7 before it. That doesn't make them a bad proposition, you just need to go in with eyes fully open.I bought my B7 at around 4yrs old. Have considered doing similar with a later B8 but have not been convinced it's "better" than the B7 for my use (5k miles a yr tops on b roads mainly). I've more recently been pondering a later RS6 or B9 RS4 but suspect they're going further away from what I "need"...and the RS3 doesn't appeal at all.
The B7 is far from a hardship to own, though not a cheap car to run (none of them are)...will see what sort of man logic comes to the fore next year

I think you're right. You'll lose 10-15k over 2 years. Probably lose similar amounts or more on cars that are 2-3 years old over a similar period.Gassing Station | Audi, Seat, Skoda & VW | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
