What is "workshop mode" used for?

A friend's car went to VW for a oil, filter change, and MOT. The car was connected to a computer. The car was most likely put into "workshop mode".

What's the purpose of "workshop mode" when having an MOT?

Do you mean that your friend changed a setting or you suspect that the dealership did?

There are certain, passive scans that ODIS (the main VAG diagnostic tool) does (i.e. looking for modifications on warranty vehicles, checking for updates/recalls) but "workshop mode" isn't something I've heard of.
