Asking for a friend who is considering a late Mk6 GTI or an early Mk7. Manual transmission. Which one would you go for and why?

I have a Mk5 GTI and really can’t see myself parting with it but not driven the subsequent editions.

I can't see any reason (other than price) of why you would go Mk6 over Mk7. It moves the game on in pretty much every area - performance, handling, looks, running costs etc. The Mk7 is holding its money incredibly well for a reason.

Had a friend who had a stage 1 Mk5 and regrets getting his Mk6 as an example. Just replaced most of the suspension on my 180k mile Mk5 and it's like new now, very happy with it. Any reason he's only considering a Mk6 or Mk7? You can find good, low mileage ED30s if he looks.

If its a MK6 make sure its not one with a dodgy chain tensioner.

1. Make sure its been replaced
2. Budget 400 for just the tensioner or 1000 for everything
3. Get one of the last models to be built
4. Consider ED35

Cheers for the replies. I did recommend a mint ED30 with xenons etc but he finds the Mk5 outdated.

MK6 feels like a MK5. MK7 is much better platform

MK7 - MK5 Edition 30 - MK6 GTI

Would be my order of preference.

Agreed. MK7 is the biggest jump VW have made in their models in terms of ride, power, toys.

The Pirelli Ed MK5 is pretty cool as well, an even rarer ED30 variant.

I agree with everything stated above, the MK7 improves in all areas except the seats.
