My mk7 GTD is currently at the local VW garage with an intermittent eml, and they have diagnosed it as the oil pressure switch. However, they told me that I will need to pay for diagnostics, and replacement of a 'one time use' plastic cover, even though the pressure switch is covered by warranty. Is this normal, or correct? Part of the reason I bought approved used is to get the peace of mind for a pain free solution to any problems but I'm not impressed now!

I've previously claimed on the VW Extended Warranty a few times that was administered by Mondial and I've never had to pay for diagnosis, although I was advised that if the issue wasn't covered under warranty then I would have to pay them. Based on my experience, I don't think you should have to pay for anything.

I would say it's normal for VW group approved used over 3 years old.

I've had two approved used SEAT's and now a Golf.

Thanks, the car had a similar problem around 6 months ago, and the same garage had a look, and advised that if it was not warranty work they would charge for diagnostics, but otherwise it would be free. (It was warranty work, so I didn't pay anything). This time around they didn't mention any diagnostic charges until they confirmed that it was in fact warranty work. When I reminded them of the previous occasion, they seemed a bit flustered but told me there must have been a change of policy! I think I'll ask for written confirmation from the warranty company that they will not cover these costs when they call to say it is ready. Not much more I can think of that I can do

How was the car sale/warranty marketed to you?

Do you have their website spiel and any docs?

For approved used warranty I wouldn't expect to pay a charge to diagnose their liability.

No.

Not being funny or anything, but it's not exactly hard to find the warranty booklet on the VW site and search for "diagnostic".

Bear in mind that dealers will try and screw every penny out of you they can. Many people will just pay - so bonus for the dealer. They might be annoyed and never buy a VW again but the service staff don't care. If you challenge the charge they'll look at you as if you're a piece of st.

There are the general brochures which you can find online, I must admit I didn't really discuss the warranty in that much detail when I was purchasing. They say this :
"We will not pay for any diagnostic costs, other than the reasonable costs of diagnosis should
a claim for a defective component be valid under this cover."

Just for completeness, I printed out a copy of the warranty details from the dealer I bought the car from, and took it into the local dealer. Sales guy talked to his manager and came back telling me that what was written in the warranty only applies if you take it to the same franchise. Doesn't say that in the paperwork but whatever. However on this occasion they waived the diagnostics fee. Good result but not impressed by their tactics.
