Talk to me about audi s6 4.0 v8T, any common issues?
Discussion
these seem to be a bit of a bargain compared to the rs6 and im guessing with a simple re-map could be quite potent.
any issues to be aware of?
looking at 15/16 plate models in avant form.
are the gearboxes any good? i see they are s-tronic and from memory the s-tronic boxes are not that strong.
cheers

They're pretty good actually.
They're most definitely a bargain and well-specified Avants are extremely desirable.
With standard power I've only ever seen one C7 S6/7 gearbox go wrong having sold and serviced dozens. The box has a 40k oil change interval, be sure you stick to it. On a tuned car I'd be inclined to do it more often. Anecdotally they're fine with more power but I can't say it's a car I've ever felt is underpowered.
Again, with standard power I've only ever seen one eat its turbos. The internet will tell you they're fragile (oil starvation) but with regular oil changes they're reliable.
Front brakes last about 40k miles and are an expensive, Audi-only, 400mm disc. Over a grand to put fronts on. Nothing aftermarket available.

Bought mine new in 2017 and still have it, it's not missed a beat but I don't do many miles as I have more than one car to spread them over.
It ticked over 21,000 today.
It will be for sale early next year when it's replacement arrives (Fully electric - tax reasons). I'll be sad to see it go, it's only the huge financial advantage of going electric that made it a no brainer.
It is comfortable and hilariously fast on the motorway.

Have put a deposit on a nice blue 2012 S6 avant, collecting tomorrow subject to inspection.
68k miles, pretty much every option bar pan roof such as HUD, power heated everything including heated steering wheel, 360 cameras. Discs were a bit low and corroded but managed to get 2k knocked off the asking whilst PXing my 320d so have some budget to replace (and boy do they need a budget!).
Tested it earlier in the week along with a couple others. This one had the sports differential option which made a big difference, much sharper. Close in poise to old M3 but with tonnes more torque.
Perfect family wagon and ULEZ commuter to boot.

Picked it up just as the inspection finished. Couple new issues found, left wing mirror won't retract (motor fail) and a slight knocking from front right suspension ball joint/bushing. No major concerns. And already got 2k knocked off asking which is a result. The car came with a low value warranty which might be worth claiming these and get rectified for the 10% excess (prob get all sorted for couple hundred my money). Have also got the car onto the Audi extended warranty which I'll keep for at least a year till more confident in the car.
Found the history of the car via former specialist servicer, had turbos and all related items replaced at about 40k miles. Ausi quoted 19k for this work, specialist did it for 6k with official parts. Never had a haldex service so will get that done aswell as put an RS6 airbox on as the standard one been molested to mimic the opening but with no gauze stopping leaves getting in.
As for the car it's incredible. The refinement and comfort is suprising. Barely a sound cruising up the M1 today at 70mph, did 32+mpg which isn't bad. Air suspension is like riding on a cloud. Bose system is by far best audio I've heard in a car. Like being on a sound stage. The HUD is useful and works well. Seats are great and adjust every way I'd want.
It can be really lazy and ponderous at junctions, especially when not setting off in a sporty mode. But then chuck it round a corner or roundabout it's weight disappears, so taught and quick turning in like a magic trick. So just needs some getting used to coming from very direct manuals. But as a family cruiser it's incredible. Baby slept the whole way from Watford Gap to Junction 40. Only stirred when I washed the rear screen which judders and, predictably, needs replacing (blade not baby).
The engine is a real barnstormer, the front lifts up when doing a fast start which is in part the suspension but fun nonetheless. The sound comes through well, a muted bassy thunder when pushing on. Complete opposite of the last V8 I had (S65).

If anyone is in the market for one, I also looked at this one which was by far the best condition (including the one I got).

I would have got this one had I not needed to part ex my bmw.

Stunning colour, that! So many are black, and having had a black S5 Sportback for so many years I can't have another black car!It is comfortable and hilariously fast on the motorway.
Had mine for 4years now bought it at 6k miles just turned 31k today and traveled all over Europe with it loves 100 Ron petrol at Germany and wakes the engine up so much more. I really don’t know what I would replace it with utterly reliable and deceptively quick for something so unassuming from outside. Enjoy your purchase.
Picked mine up Thursday from Dunstable and drove straight up to Yorkshire to see family.

Really impressed, silent as an EV most the time when cruising on the motorway but wakes up nicely when provoked. Handled the Fosseway late last night on way back home better than any car I've had so far. So smooth, effortless and predictable. Made the right choice to buy a better/faster family car. Wasn't expecting it to be so refined.
The engine gets stinking hot. Never been above 90C on the gauge but the cover and the air exiting the bay after even a short drive are surprisingly hot. Have read a lot of horror stories about turbos going on these due to oil filter blockage/turbo oil starving. This one has had the turbos and all oil lines filters replaced but will def be keeping an eye on it.

Thanks, also @adrian for the oil filter updated part. I'll check with the indy who did the turbo replacement when it was done and if this updated part used. If not I'll do it in the next 5-10k to be sure.
Some other little niggles like a knocking FR ball joint, wrongly routed ABS cable (same corner), and left wing mirror folding motor/mech failed but can look past these as got £2k knocked off the asking for disks being low and corroded. Will prob claim for what I can on the <£1k 6month warranty that came with the car.
Also last owner hacked out a hole in the airbox to mimic RS6 airbox. Gonna get the RS6 airbox put in, only £170.
Have also heard the RS6 Turbos don't have the same oil filer clogging issue so might be a worthy upgrade later.

Hiya
Assuming you're on Facebook, have a search for 'Camspec DS Autowerks' - they're based in Crawley, and there's a post dated 14 March where he details the work done to the S8 I mentioned. In addition to the new turbos it was a modified oil feed strainer and control valve. There's pics as well

Thanks, have looked into that and will definately be having that part at the next oil service.
I'm getting a bit fed up with the throttle response. Even in Dynamic mode, the lag between pressing the throttle and the car/gearbox getting that message to the engine to start accelerating (NOT turbo lag or other engine related power lag) is ruining the spirited driving a bit. It's almost as if I need to drive like an 80s F1 car and apply throttle before the car exits the corner. I'm sure this is an ECU/Programming/Gearbox protecting part of the design rather than an inherent lack of response of the engine hardware.
Yes, I'm coming from an M3 6MT and an E91 320d M Sport manual. These two cars were way closer to each other in terms of throttle response than the S6. The S6 feels 3/4 times less responsive than the diesel so it's definitely drivetrain/control/software, not engine/hardware.
Am going to see what tuning options for the gearbox/control systems are available in the first instance (rather than try changing the engine mapping to try and solve, the engine is not the problem, it's what's controlling it).
Other than that I'm loving it. So fast, so comfortable, so spacious, so quiet. Even got 40mpg out of it on the M4 last week. 35+ is easily achieved on motorway. Have updated the GUI and maps to the latest and even tho its the pre-facelift model the integrated sat nav is still useful in that the head up display as it gives the perfect route guidance info at junctions which is better than looking at gmaps/waze on phone.
Having the passenger wing mirror and the front right lower bent arm replaced on the warranty that came with the car which were the only niggles I found in the purcchase insepction (got 2k knocked off the price for these and discs being slightly corroded).
Picture after a wash, loving the colour

Could definitely sit a bit lower but I'm very happy that it doesn't catch on kerbs and no risk of bottoming on speedhumps.
