Typically, after not renewing the extended warranty on Mrs H's Mk7.5 GTi (she was fed up with the main dealer, so we took the gamble... frown ), we've now got a coolant leak which has been diagnosed as the usual water pump issue.

I've managed to find out some information online, but I'm struggling to find either a set of parts diagrams or a definitive list of parts required. (Seen some lists talking about the belt and pulley, some not bothering, for example)

I'm also trying to work out exactly what's got to come out to get at it all, and whether it's worth changing / checking anything else at the same time.

In case it helps, the car is a '68 plate on just under 50k miles, so timing chain should be OK and (I believe) it should be on the later-spec tensioner. Car not often driven hard and won't be taken on track.

Any / all advice welcome,

Thanks,
Martin.

Thermostat, water pump, plastic coolant hose (tiny one), belt, seals, inlet manifold gasket.

Inlet manifold off. Book labour time is ~4 hrs.

Hope to be in a 7.5 GTi v.soon

Checked with a local audi/vw (independent) garage in Iver and was quoted the following incase required.

+++

The cost for the Replacement of the Thermostat Housing, Waterpump, Drive Belt and Gasket for the Intake Manifold would be:

Parts: £533.70
Coolant: £16.00
Labour: £360.00
Total Cost: £1091.64 including parts, labour and vat

Good luck

Had mine done for £650 last year by independent in Hounslow. Labour was 5 hours at £60 included in total cost of £650. He did say it was a fiddly job to do and wouldn’t recommend diy.

Thanks all, that helps.

As for DIY, I'm not sure Mrs H would allow me to even if I felt up for doing something like this...so this one will go on the c/card...

£185 INA thermostat pump kit, £10 intake manifold, £150 labour. It took more than 3 hours in reality but only charged for 3

Because it's over 500 quid of genuine parts and 4 hours of labour. At their rates it's easily over a grand. Costs me 8-900.

Hopefully mine will last me out now did I read somewhere the replacement part was modified so it's more robust ?

Are we talking like for like ? The INA kit is over £300, £50 per labour is very cheap too.

We would only ever fit genuine on these

What causes replacement, my R was reported as having a slight leak 3 years ago but it's barely used any since and is fine. Do they just let go and dump all the coolant eventually. I'm on 75k miles which seems a risk mileage for these.

Coolant just drops, when it gets closer to the end it really starts to use it, if your not putting anything in then leave it alone. We have a 1.0 in today it has the same issues but is much easier to do as you don't have to remove the intake manifold. You will know when you need to do it.

Thanks Steve, that's reassuring. I'll just keep an eye on consumption.

Keep reading about this fault is it every 4 cyl turbo engine and is this still a potential fault on new(ish)cars or are fitted parts now updated from manufacture?
