For a good few years, normally around winter, I hanker for a C6 RS6 as a bit of a beater, take the kids to football, thrash about a bit, and not be too precious about.

I’ve had C6 S6, 3 x R8 V10 and an S8 V10, all without huge issues, however, these RS6’s terrify me.

There’s a few around in the lower teens, price wise, and probably a false economy, but, I feel like taking a punt on one with say 100k or so miles, with a reasonably good history, might be worth a gamble.

Let’s face it, they are ALL a gamble aren’t they?! Potentially huge bills regardless of miles or history.

There’s one on Autotrader that’s been on a long time, and it keeps tempting me in, but, I reckon if I want to get out of it at any point, I may be stuck with it or lose a big chunk of change.

Talk some sense into me please and tell me to avoid them at all costs…..please?!

No part of the purchase of a C6 RS6 is sensible. Everything about them is silly.

The car. The performance. That they ever got built in the first place. All silly.

Also silly are the bills, faults, time spent in garage, number of hours required to change seemingly minor parts, time spent waiting for parts, time spent in taxis/buses whilst it's broken...

Don't get me wrong, they're cool things and I very much like them. If you have a willing cheque book and sense of humour then crack the whip. Buy the best one you can find. Do you have a specialist inside sensible travel range? If you can find one that's had its leaks sorted, has been reasonably well maintained, and is up to date on (expensive) brakes and tyres it shouldn't be too bad.

I am 30 mins form MRC, so not horrendous.

This would be a frivolous purchase, as I really dont need it, but just always fancied one.

I fully understand potential bork factor, but they range from £10k to £25k, and there's a risk even with a £25k one, so figured at least if the lower end has had decent enough maintenance, there is a chunk of money to spend before it matches the £25k ones, and there's always the outside chance I get lucky....

  • for clarity, I own an extremely silly car already, Challenger Hellcat Redeye!

The other thing to hold in mind with "bottom of the market" cars, is that if it doesn't work properly or is a perennial pain in the backside you'll get no opportunity to enjoy it.

It is common for people to sell these rather than repair them.

If you've ran R8 V10's then you have the means to run the C6 RS6. Try get one that's been taken care of by a recognized specialist like MRC. If you live 30 mins from them it shouldn't be too hard. They are solid units once they have been taken care of but the engine is packed in tightly so its engine out for a lot of things, 50p seal most infamously. They are a real experience, especially if you go stage 2 or higher. You'd need to be in a 991 Turbo or modded GTR to get the endless wall of torque experience I'd imagine. I grew tired of not being able to use the power day to day and the bouncy ride on poor roads. I run a B7 RS4 and 8V RS3 now which I prefer but that said if I hadn't run a C6 RS6 I'd have died wondering about them!

Did you ever indulge your desire OP? I have a similar hankering. I currently drive an A6 C6 Avant 3.0 TFSI which has really grown on me. I know the RS6 is a different car in many ways, but I do like the idea of cabin familiarity with a V10 under the bonnet.
