For the last couple of months, an orange exclamation mark would appear on the dash board stating a Lever Selector Fault. It happened when I would start the engine in the morning on most days. On some days, it didn’t switch on at all.

Then recently, the exclamation mark went red so I had it booked in with Audi and had them run a diagnostic.

They recommended to change a part and add the gearbox oil as it had just done 40,000 miles. It cost over £1300 plus VAT. As I was concerned I had the work carried out.

Has anyone else experienced this ? Was it the right course of action?

My brother mentioned as it’s related to the gearbox, it should have been done for free? Your thoughts please? Thank you.

I think Dr G was looking for a bit more detail as you stated it was an Audi A3 in the title. Information like confirming it's a DSG, which year and engine.

Certain earlier automatic 8Y A3s have a known issue with part of the gear selector mechanism (the part on the gearbox side rather than the car interior). The selector mechanism is about £400 and 4 hours of labour to install.

Thank you Dr G for all the information. Are you implying then that it’s a cost that the customer has to pick up? It had been suggested to me that issues related to the gearbox should be picked up by the manufacturer 🤷🏽‍♀️
What would you advise ?

In current climate unless you have a stellar relationship with the dealer and history of chunky spend you're unlikely to get much by way of goodwill.
