A4 key and remote not working, can't get in

Good evening,
I’ve a 2008 A4 convertible and this morning I tried to unlock it with the remote on the key fob and it didn’t respond. Unfortunately I don’t seem to be able to unlock with the key either.
From the vertical position the key turns 90 degrees clockwise and anticlockwise, there is some resistance but doesn’t feel like much until it gets to the dead stops at end of travel.
Should I feel it mechanically engaging or is it an electronic lock? I’ve not used the mechanical lock so it’s possible it was already broken. I’ve just put some wd40 in.
I’ve just changed the battery but only after a few more tries. The car was last used at the weekend and it had a new battery in the last six months, the red alarm light is flashing on the door top.
Any thoughts would be welcome please. Or recommendations for suitable locksmiths in the West Suffolk (IP27) area?
