I have a W-reg Golf, 1.6L, 8 valve. For a few months now it has exhibited a strange tendency to turn itself off, both while stationary and underway.

Stationary it feels like I've just turned the key, while moving it feels like it fails momentarily, then bump starts itself back into life, with an appropriate judder.

Since this began, I've replaced the battery, spark plugs, HT leads, & ignition coil, mostly stuff that was dirty/old and needed throwing away anyway, but to no effect. Took the MAF sensor off yesterday and cleaned it, also did nothing but I might replace that regardless.

While I wait for this phantom 'cough' to return tomorrow morning, does anybody have any ideas, or things I've missed?

Cheers

Dr G

Nil codes so far.

Fuel Filter is next on the list, just as soon as the ground dries out. I wonder why it's so intermittent (once or twice per hour) if the filter's clogged/playing silly bugger.

Thanks for the suggestions

Fuel pressure being weird sounds plausible for your cutting out. That or perhaps an earth somewhere corroded/loose?
