Hi,

Looking for a recommendation for cleaning matte black exhaust pipes on a 2024 RS4 avant. All I can find are products for chrome/stainless steel exhausts. So any tips/recommendations are appreciated!

The 2 staff in Halfords had no idea as never been asked before. And neither did the car parts shop around the corner. Surely there must be a product for matte black exhausts. They need a good clean.

Thanks!

Welcome to Pistonheads.

The factory finish on those tips is poor quality. Prone to chipping/pitting etc. Any aggressive abrasives or cleaning products on them is likely to make them worse rather than better. Audi recommends the use of ABS60000010 "Industrial contamination remover". In my experience once tatty/aged they simply don't clean up very well.

Common to see people take them off then paint or powder coat with something more durable. We've had good results with BBQ paint, believe it or not!

Autoglym super resin polish is available in Halfords, mild and wont do any damage but as suggested it may be too far gone.

Thanks Dr G and Belle427 for your tips. I’ll try the autoglym first. I’ve used BBQ paint on a BBQ in the past, not sure I would do a decent job on the exhaust though.

As it's a fairly new car you might be lucky. If the coating on them is still good and you clean them regularly you'll avoid the worst of it.

This is what Audi have to say on the subject:

Your right mate this was the exhaust tips on my RS3 at two years old Audi said it was caused by stones getting thrown up through the tips

Just like the window surrounds and aluminium interior inlays - been poor for years but Audi have never done anything about it.
