looking at options to replace by Freelander and one of these has been suggested

my budget is about £20k so only a 3.2 petrol is realistic

any views/experiences?

Just bought one and must say you will find it a HUGE step up from the freelander in terms of build quality, on road ability and comfort (my mother has a freelander) We tested a Range Rover and X5 and preferred the Touareg and apparently they are pretty good off road too, which cant be said of most SUV's. The engine is from the R32 so its smooth, quick enough and makes quite a nice noise. Go and drive one, you will be very surprised at how good it is, I was.

IMHO

I have just been considering a new 3.0 V6 Diesel Altitude. I drove one when they were released and the quality of the interior was fantastic.

The 3.0TDi would be my preferred choice, but didnt want to spend so much as its a third car really. By all accounts a little quicker than the 3.2V6 and more economical, very smooth and quiet too and yes the interior quality is superb. My only gripe is the seats, even tho I have the 12 way electric seats with lumbar etc.. they are not that supportive at the sides, maybe you have to be 'of larger build' in order to fill the seats...

Not sure of the 'must haves' Im told Sat nav is essential for resale..... also Auto of course (manual) knocks off £1k. Just go with the best spec you can get for the money I suppose. I have the Xenon headlights, paddle shift, elctric memory seats, parking sensors, 6CD, self closing boot, Leather and Sat Nav. Out of these I think leather, Auto, elec seats and parking sensors would be my 'must haves'

IMHO

A mate of mine has one in Germany (company car) and he absolutely hates it. Granted, he hates SUVs, but apparently its had loads of issues like needing a whole new rear differential among other things. Also, the battery runs down after a few weeks of not being used, its placed under the seat, which is electric... Costs him a nice 500Euro every time!

Recently drove a fellow PHer's 5.0 V10 example.

One of the more amusing motoring anecdotes for Bilbo's next motoring tome.

Quite literally, monstrous, hauling in a base 996 at steam and Cayennesque handling to boot, all wrapped up in a reasonably discreet style with vast refinement.

Few people seemed ready to accept such physical mass actually capable of mustering the acceleration it so readily displays and all at the merest flex of foot hinge.

Suffering little of the tossological bling which now so unfairly taints the wonderful Rangey, this quiet leviathan is, imho, the unsung performance 4x4.

Having searched the forum for 'Touareg' I found this, and feel an update is necessary.

I drove a 2007 V10 yesterday. My thoughts:

Huge car. Dated cabin, average materials. More squeaks than my Grand Cherokee. Numerous warning lights refused to extinguish on start up, owner assured me the local garage would 'wipe these clean'. Still, the drivetrain warning was a bit worrying. On 20" alloys with low profiles, this thing handled like an expensive 2.5 tonne SUV with air suspension should - it was lovely and cornered well. On anything but a smooth surface however the damping was terrible. Brakes were good. Engine was responsive and had huge torque - great fun. Lots of bings and ponging warning signals and an overactive PDC marred the experience however, as did the steering wheel height which wouldn't go high enough to clear the top of the speedo. I'm 6'1". General build quality was average, but then I think the same of a RR. Did I buy it? No. It wasn't very good.

Well to be honest it sounds a bit knackered!

That's my conclusion as well. Search the Touareg forums however and it seems random warning lights are a frequent occurrence. Unfortunately the fear one might be a sign of something serious is enough to put the fear of God into me. Apparently some Touareg owners (older cars I imagine) can live with this!
