MK4 Golf on-board computer advice please!

After a short fling with an Audi Cab and a BMW 323i I've had to get sensible again and I've just brought myself anouther Golf GTi Turbo. Its a 98 S, however on this car I notice it doesn't have the central dash computer display which my previouse GTi T had. To confirm, it would display AV MPG, MPH TEMP etc etc. I guess this would have been an option when specing your car from new. It only has a small display area to the left which still shows MPG etc, but more in the style of the Mk3 Golf.

Can anyone tell me, is it possible to upgrade the on-board computer, or is this a case of 'more money and time than it's worth?'.

There's always something not quite right when your buying a 2nd hand car, be it the colour, spec or mileage.
