Yeah id go with Iguana on this one, they usually make a racket when theyre getting tired.
Cost about £100 to replace them all yourself...no major hassle.
Yep, how many miles and what engine type?
My 1.8 needed them at about 150k - it depends a lot on the type of oil that has been used previously and now. You can "quieten" them by using a thinner oil for the time being, but in the long term it's best to change them.
Agree with costs - one tip (and excuse if I am teaching grandma to suck eggs here) - get the tip-ex out and mark the points where the belts and the pulley's line up when you take the cam out - otherwise you'll have fun and games working out where TDC getting the timing correct!

Whoa!
What type of oil filter are you using???
On the early Golf's you can only really use the genuine or Mann filters, these filters have the non-return valves in. Most other pattern filters don't have this and temporarily run the top end dry when the engine is primed from cold.
If this is the case, changing the oil with a genuine filter normally stops this, nothing to worry about, the genuine filter is less than a fiver anyhoew.
Do this and see if it's the same?????
