That could be the problem, the chain could be catching on every oscelation. Does the knocking noise become more rapid when you rev the engine?some garage who never works on these cars thought it might be an exhaust valve.

It could be plenty of other things too, get it over to someone who knows about these pronto!
Yeah check the tensioner and also make sure it isnt your chain that has developed some slack because they can start banging about when they have aged.
