Polo Problems

Thought i would seek out some wisdom so here goes:

I have a 1995 mk4 polo and for a couple of weeks have noticed a whirring noise coming from one of the wheels. initially i thought it was a wheel bearing but after a 300 mile trek down the motorway the whirring is still there along with an occasional clunk which makes me think that it may be a shock to blame??

i did the obligatory jack up and shake the wheels test but they all seem solid. any ideas. its booked into the garage for wednesday
