Posting this up for friend who has a a4 avant 2.0tdi 170bhp and is only getting 30mpg. How does this compare with others out there?
Car has covered 1500 miles of mixed driving.

I had a TDI 170 A3 - same engine. I used to get 42mpg average over the 17k miles I did in it. The economy didn't get any better or worse from the first tank to the last. It was a good engine in a very good car, but I wouldn't have another Diesel I don't think. A work colleague has a Octavia with the same engine, he gets 48 mpg. The 170 isn't as good on fuel as I'd expected it to be.

That said, I've changed the A3 for a 2.0 TFSI Mk2 TT and I get 38 out of that all day long. Where's the justification for diesel now?

Phil.

Thanks for quick response; he's getting low 30's at mo so very disappointed!
I average mid 40's constantly in 140bhp identical car.
Main dealer just tried fobbing off and hence putting it up on here to get some real world mpg figures.

I don't have an Audi but 30 mpg does sound very low. I am running a 120D (177) at the moment and would have thought that would be comparable on fuel consumption and i'm getting the sort of figure that Phil has just mentioned and my car has done 1,600 miles.

Of course there is no guarantee that isn't caning it, but even so something doesn't sound quite right. Interestingly I spoke to my dealer about the 120D fuel consumption as the manufacturers "claimed" figure was high 50's so I thought high 40's would be possible. Apparantly BMW won't entertain any claims for fuel consumption until the car has done 4-5K miles. So it could be that your friends car could be a bit of a late developer.

I have an A4 TDI 140 and so far at 4K miles I am getting about 45 mpg on motorway runs with an average MPG of about 42. I dont know what Audi have done to these new 2 litre diesels, but they sure seem thirsty compared to my old A4 TDi 1.9/130. They seem to need extreme 'gentleness' to get reasonable MPG. I used to get 50-52 cruising on the motorway at 80 ish.

How fast are you going. I drove one on a 150miles run to Milton Keens. Got 42mpg, doing 70-80 and a bit of town work.

Realised I have left my mobile at home, didn't like the idea of being without it all week, so drove home and back late at night 100-110 all the way 300 miles, only got 32mpg.

30mpg sounds very low. We get well over 40 in our Touran, same engine. Even our chipped 535d gets more than that (just)!

Hi.

I've sold these for many a year, and I've seen mixed rsults too.

I've had company car 140ps saloon models doing 50 + mpg, with NO CRUISE CONTROL. Easily 700 miles on a tank.

140 Avants doing a bit less i.e. 45 - 50mpg WITH CRUISE (heavier, although I understand the shape has lower high speed drag, so thought the Avant would be better).

Had 170ps Avant doing 38 - 45mpg, WITH CRUISE

and now got a saloon 170ps quattro doing 48mpg WITH NO CRUISE CONTROL if I behave myself.

I can't work out what the difference is except that cruise makes a hell of a difference - the economy is better without it!

All this is on my daily commute, 30 miles made up of the A75 single lane road, and a short spell on the A74 dual carriage way.

Many thanks for response so far, it would seem there is a problem with car and this confirms it. He's just got to convince main dealer.
