identifying a 2.6 from a 2.8 ABC engine
Discussion
Are there any obvious identifying features on the outside of these engines to tell of there capacity,as iam looking to get hold of a 2.8 from a breakers to swap out my 2.6,but as they are normally already taken out of cars and sat on the floor or on racking,so iam after a few tips. Also are there any hidden probs i may encounter during the swap, planning to freshen up the 2.8 before fitting. Thanks in advance
Of the older 12v engines the 2.6 engine code is ABC, the 2.8 is AAH.
ABC uses a speed density system the AAH uses a MAF, instant give away when looking into the engine bay.
The engine code letters and serial number are stamped on the left side of the engine block, between the cylinder head and the power steering pump
The AAH has a dual intake manfold tract which is switched by the ECU so you will need the ECU as well from the AAH to make this work. Personally if i was changing out an ABC i would go for the newer 30v 2.8 better engine that the AAH imho and more tunable. suggest stripping hte engine and cleaning the internals the V6s are prone to carbon build up and give you hellish knock. Also tappets i would replace as well.
If your feeling brave, suggest boring up the throttle body and running 3" hoses from the TB to the MAF which will help your throttle response as the AAH is generally quite a lazy engine. If your feeling braver still you can go for a full port and polish on the manifolds handy link here.
