Eh?

It's not based on the A3, but on the brand new modular platform that will also spawn the new A4!

What the hell are you on about? A5 is a re-packaged A3 ? I think someone needs to know about a subject before posting their thoughts. The new A5 couldn't be more different from an A3. The A5 is on a totally new platform caled the MLP - Modular Longtiudinal Platform. The front axle has been moved 120mm further forward, extending the wheelbase and moving the engine back in the chassis.

The A5 is Audi's first chance to try the new platform that will be the basis for the next A4, Q5, A7 and many more.

1) Its a superb drive. Coming out of 9 years worth of BMW's and more recently my SMG M3 Convertable i found the S5 a delight to drive. Especially when the weather isn't great. The M3 in the dry and on a track would be more fun, but for everything else the S5 is far superior. The grip is really something i haven't experienced before, just sticks to the road.

2) MPG - Bad - having said that i have only had it a few days and only been driving around London and sticking my foot down as much as possible - as you do in a new car.

3) The acceleartion is smooth. The M3 'felt' quicker pulling away quickly, but i'd be willing to bet this would match it all the way and the go past. The power honestly just keeps coming and coming and its very deceptive. When i pulled out of the dealer i was doing 120 before i knew it and thought i was doing about 80. Suprised me - its a very quick car.

4) I specc'd the Bang & Olufsen stereo, which is superb. A car steroe friend of mine thinks it may be lacking in a little bass but other than that he says its superb !

My point is.....

Why would I want to spend 50-60k on a car with the same interior bits and bobs as a 15k A3? brands like Merc and Audi are spreading themselves too thin! Another example is the CL55. Why on earth would I buy a car (taking engine/driving exp out of the equation) that costs 60-70k that shares the same satnav and interior parts as my other half's C Class Sport Coupe that costs 1/3 of the price? These special models in these makers cars should be more special and more different from the parts they share with cheaper models!

just my 10p worth, i'm no Clarkson, i'm not even the mightly Quentin Wilson, but just my 10p worth.

Saying that, i did see one this morning and it did look v nice, esp with the LED driving lights on! But not my cup of earl grey.

But again - you need to really go and view the Audi range properly.

The buttons, switches, Sat Nav, and EVERYTHING really in the A5 is different from the rest of the range.

Admittedly the TT, A3 or A4 share similar stereos and Nav units, but every other Audi car's parts are bespoke!

So your comment about the £50 - 60k car still makes no sense!

Your very very wrong with regards to having the same bits and bobs as an A3. Plus its not a £50k-£60k car either its a £45K ish car.

So you would never buy a Lamborghini because it has the some of the same bits and bobs? Don't make any sense to me, but each to their own !

Just out of interest which unique and individual car do you drive ?

(535dman, I should have kept this argument between us! LOL)

(Prepares himself for a public stoning)

I drive a Maserati Spyder. Yes I know. Satnav from Alfa (I used to have an Alfa before and it was the same!). Engine (detuned) from Ferrari. Vents from Fiat. Again, this is just my 10p worth (and like I said, I'm no Quentin Wilson) but if you are spending that much on a car, it should feel special, almost have some sense of occasion. When I jumo in my car pressing my Fiat keyfob, I see a sea of leather on the dash, sexy dials. Not 100% original parts etc but in a word unique to the car. Yes, it may handle like a pig. yes, it doesn't score highly as far as the Top Gear team go but its always exciting to get in and start up. Again, like I said, it wasn't meant to rub people up the wrong way or start a forum fight but it was just my 10p worth.

(PS. I've sent you a PM 535dman!)

A more interesting question is a new S5 or a 2005 Gransport for the same money?

Well, a new S5 is just under £40k with pretty much everything apart from Sat Nav. A Maser GT is going to be probably three years old before getting close to that money bearing in mind its £77k price tag. Would they really be comparable purchases?

Anyway, Spydersingh, have a look at the S5, it felt pretty special to me, particularly for less than £40k. I drive a 2004 A8 and once you go up from the A4, not to mention the basic specs, Audi's become more differentiated from each other.
