Hi all,

Yet again i am seeking advice from you experts.

I am currently looking at buying a ported and polished head for my mk2 gti 8v, what else do i need to consider when buying? My uncle warned me i should replace the head gasket and the head bolts at the same time?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Is the old head knackered or are you just uprating it?

To get the most out of it you might also want a sporty exhaust manifold and a hotter cam.

New cam belt at the same time is also a must.

Na its not nakered just doing an upgrade. I do not have a sports manifold yet but it is on the cards for next month or month after. The cam will have to wait tho. So i will need a new belt for sure.

Anything else?

Many Thanks

The bolts will need to be replaced as they are stretch bolts and it is a good time to replace all of the gaskets. You can get a good quality head gasket set from these guys vwspares.co.uk.

It is a lot easier to replace the manifold with the head off so it might be best to wait until you have the sports manifold. It took me 20mins to fit a stainless steel manifold with the head off and 3 hours with it on the engine.

If you have enough cash and the new head does not come with them it is a good idea to replace the Hydraulic Cam Followers as well, but you can always change these when you put the cam in.

Also you will get more info in the Engines & Drivetrain section wink

Hope this helps.
