Hello.

Just to give a bit of background. I recently purchased, from a friend, a 152k mile VW Jetta 16v. Whilst my friend had it, it underwent a mechanical overhaul replacing many of the engine seals and gaskets and having a general clean up. The box had some fresh oil and had a new clutch and under 2k miles later I bought the car.

I put new suspension on the car, it required a new rad which I have and in general all was going well. The clutch was a bit on/off though, not 100% smooth and it took some getting used to. My brother in law has a MK2 16v Golf and urged me to be gentle on the box/diff as they are a bit weak and abuse will finish them off.

So with that in mind, I enjoyed spirited drives in the car but didn't drive it to death or abuse it in any way.

Last Thursday evening I was out in the car, it had driven me round all day, sat on the motorway for 30 miles and covered another 5 miles off the motorway when I overtook a slower car – into third I went, the revs were around the 4k mark and with my foot down I mad the pass.

At about 5500 rpm it went with a clunk as if it slipped out of gear, and it revved freely to the red line. Simultaneously smoke bellowed out from under the car. I selected neutral and free wheeled with the engine ticking over. The oil temp hadn’t moved from about 106 degrees and it wasn’t making any strange noises. When the car came to a halt, I inspected the car and it appeared as though there was fluid coming from where the box meets the engine [not that technical – sorry]. All the fluid came out, I can guess that much.

I do have break down cover but under the circumstances I was a short distance to where I could leave the car.

So I took a gamble and tried to drive it. The clutch felt a little different but seemed to pick up ok, and I ran the car @ 1000 rpm in 1st for a mile, keeping a keen eye on all the temps. Again the car made no odd noises – the box I believe was a reasonable one anyway as it didn’t crunch or anything.

So that’s where I am to date. Any idea’s?

Would the car still drive if the diff had gone? And isn't there a £40 repair kit for the diff pins?

Thats exactly what happened on my MKII GTI 8v, punched a hole in the diff casing so new gearbox. Go on one of the club sites, clubgti or edition38 and see if there are any 2nd hand gearboxes about. I picked one up for £65 and a local specialist fitted it for £120, might as well fit a new clutch if its a bit worn as well.

Good work - blowing stuff up is fun (if irritating!)
