No, sorry Ben.
No 3.0 - I agree on the face of it the 3.0 V6 would make sense, but too much weight in the nose for a small car like the A3.
Is yours the 140ps?
The 170ps version is seriously rapid, particularly with quattro where the final drive is a touch shorter.
One of those might suit you...
For some real go you might consider going for an S3, and foregoing some mpg in favour of ooomph!
There will be some new A3 models over the next 12 months - all are "embargoed" at present so no info, but the range will have one particularly sought after model added!

Just going o/t a sec here:
My A4 is in the bodyshop due to being rear ended by a numpty. Anyway, the loaner I got is an A4 2.0 Tdi SE. Seems to be a case of foot on accelerator...waaaaaaaiiittttt, no, waaaitt some more...then BANG...power comes in furiously, torque steer all over the place, then after a few seconds it runs out of puff.
Main point being, not sure I could go back to a non quattro Audi after experiencing that. Are they all that bad? (seem to recall a 1.9tdi service loaner I had last year was pretty much the same)

I suspect then that it's the 170ps you have driven. My A4 is in the bodyshop due to being rear ended by a numpty. Anyway, the loaner I got is an A4 2.0 Tdi SE. The set up in the engine "map" on the 170 has been done for a reason - that of making the exhaust emissions as low as possible. This is why the 2.0TDi 170ps has as low emissions as the 1.9TDi 115ps, however on boost it exceptionally quick.
The reason for the seemingly monumental lag at low revs is the emissions. At low revs the engine is starved of fuel and air to ensure EVERYTHING is burned off properly.
I have to say that once you get used to how much throttle is needed as you engage the clutch to move away, you can avoid the lag altogether, and when on the move you soon learn what gear to be in to ensure you always have boost.
I agree with your appraisal of the power delivery, but if you drove it every day you would be very used to it.
I enjoy my 170 TDi, infact between 50 and 80 it's not that far behind my S4 on the "through the gears" acceleration.
I would imagine that the 2.5 and 3.0 Tdi should really only be in quattro format, or that torque steer would be unbearable?
This morning, pulling onto the motorway, a road I take everyday, accelerating hard, the steering wheel nearly jumpped out of my hand and the car shot half across the next carriageway (Im guessing there where some lorry undulations which didnt help?) It suprised me a bit TBH as I do that journey everyday and my A4 just gets on with it.
The, in particular, 3.0 tdi is hugely fast and will be a consideration for my next Audi. I chanced upon an A6 3.0tdi in my previous chipped A4 1.8T Sport quattro and he just showed me a clean pair of heels as he romped away from me
Now, if they'd only make me a 4.0tdi A6, with a 'proper' body kit on, to make it look like an S6 or even RS6, Id buy one in a flash

TBH it sounds like the loaner you have has a problem - I've never had torque steer of that type in any A4.
As you rightly say the 3.0TDi is quattro, but in many cases the largest engine size on an Audi only comes with quattro.
The 2.5TDi (now replaced by the smoother 2.7TDi) with front drive are pussycats - no torque steer really.
My previous post about the power delivery I would stand by, but even a front drive 170 shouldn't be so bad. Tell your dealer when you give it back to them.

My dealership have offered me a test drive but I just cant get my head round the styling of the A5. Dont get me wrong, I 'really' wanted to like it, but I dont. Having said that I cancelled my order for one of the first current shape A6s because I didnt like them, but they have grown on me (if only they would make it look a bit 'harder', if you follow me?)
Still, if I can detatch myself from the A5 shape, would be good to see how the new engine performs (I wasnt aware until you said it this was a 'new' engine)

Somehow I don't think the Germans will listen!
TBH the new 3.0TDi in the A5 which will EVENTUALLY roll out across the range is so awesome, I think that will do you!!
Try to get a go in the A5 3.0TDi. Shockingly brisk, and it WILL return 40mpg driven normally!
Tried one last weekend, was not that impressed over my A6 3.0 chipper and mine does well over 40mpg with air con on and fully loaded.TBH the new 3.0TDi in the A5 which will EVENTUALLY roll out across the range is so awesome, I think that will do you!!

Wait until the A5 is run in like your A6 - I know already our A5 is considerably quicker than our A6 when both are new. Also the chip thing - well we are discussing std cars, yes a chipped car will always be a bit sharper, but in the new A5 engine the exhaust emmissions and therefore company car and road tax are less also.
Andrew, I had another test this morning, exactly the same place. I 'may' have been a 'little' unfair about the torque steer. Whilst the steering wheel still jumped about a bit (too much for my liking) Im thinking I may have had a little bit (and I do mean 'little') of right hand lock on as I turned onto the motorway, compounded by the lorry tracks in the tarmac, sent me scooting across the inside lane and wobble into the middle lane for a second?
Anyway, giggle of the day so far was the Audi satnav that, upon approaching a junction with 4 possible exits, told me to "turn slightly right"...
WTF was that all about?

I have had recent experience of this, took my A4 Avant Quattro sport 1.9 (130) in for servicing recently and was provided with a new 2.0tdi a4. Found the loaner much quicker than mine but suffered from writhing steering wheel under full boost....would love new engine transplanted into my car however!!

I love how the lady's voice sounds so, well frankly, filthy when she's telling you what to do...
She'll probably take you down some narrow lanes and through rivers as well just because they're rights of way on her map!

Did I say that out loud?
