Picking a 7 year old one up next week. Looks very well looked after from the description.

Anything specific I should be looking out for when I check it over / any general advice?

Hi,
I have just picked up a 2001 model,
22K miles and mint.
Amazing car seems very well put together,
Engine mang light came on after filling up with BP ultimate got the fault checked as throttle body linked, gone now after reset not reappeared yet?
I have purchased a very comprehensive warranty with it to cover most things.
I would publish some pics but can't seem to get it right.
Its on my profile
Let me know how your new one goes.

They are in my experience usually beset by miriad electrical problems in later life.

Awesome value cars though. Most had a high spec including Sat Nav Plus, solar panel sunroof, leather elec mem seats, and of course they had the wider arches from the S6, but with classy, understated bumpers front and rear.

Try to get an Audi warranty from your dealer, or try to contact Audi regarding this as they will be expensive if they do go wrong.

I tried Northampton Audi for a quote,
How does two grand sound?
Guessed they didn'y really fancy cars out of their approved scheme,
I went with warranty direct I guess I will see how good the policy is if I need it.

On the topic of the S6 I tried to find one but they all seemed mainly over priced.
My 4.2 is only 40 bhp less I would like to drive both side by side to see like for like.

Had a 4.2 sport saloon for around 12 months and 15,000 miles - fantastic car, comfortable and quick - well built and lots of kit. Surefooted, but tends to oversteer when pushing on - you are reminded that you're in a big heavy car. We had several electrical problems (windows, seats, followed by engine management issues) which ultimately led us to sell it. Servicing was very expensive - regular cambelt change/inspection required - 80,000 mile major service from an independent cost around £1000.

....and I did not enjoy the Audi main dealer experience!! In some cases spare part availability may be an issue - the A6 4.2 Sport Quattro was built in limited numbers.

Thoroughly miss the car though - imposing, well equiped and comfortable - and sounded great in a 'Nascar in the distance' kind of way.

Picked it up yesterday. What a car!!

Had extras that were not advertised, like the Solar sun roof, heated front and rear seats and auto dipping mirrors.

Also, was expecting paddle shifts for the tip-tronic gearbox like the newer Audis and was disappointed to find none. However driving back on the North circular, put the car in manual, drive a bit, then thought I'll see if those buttons are still not working (you know what's going to happen next!!) Go from 5th to 2nd gear in heavy traffic in the outside lane of the dual carriageway. So apologies if you were behind me on the NC yesterday. I am a plum!!

I am scared by the amount of things that can go wrong on the car, but I have to say, I love that engine!!

Good to hear you have it.
You have up and down buttons on the steering wheel? or you should have?

Which fuel are you going to use?

I'll probably stick with the expensive stuff, unless there is none wink

The buttons are on the front of the steering wheel.

The reason for asking is when I filled with BP ultimate and my engine management light has come on sixty miles later, I have access to the software and the fault is logged as running too rich or throtle sensor both sides?

But it has reappeared after resetting, I'll get it looked at at next service no loss on performace, which is great all the time anyway.

on the subject of the A6 4.2 which tyres are you guys running at the moment? I keep ending up with the Dunlop sp9000 (which i think was OE from the factory)-what alternatives are out there and how do you find them?

Mine came with SportConti 2 on a set of 17" not sure if standard?
Has the RS6 suspension fitted so is running quite low, will have to see about how they wear.

Mine had the standard alloys which had Avon ZZ tyres. 255 45 R17s. They seem to stick to the road quite nicely. I don't like the look of the standard alloys, but the wide wheels look good and grip well.

Anyone else have a creaky central console? It seems like the seat is rubbing on it. I am considering removing it.

Are the ones on mine standard?
There is a picture on my profile. the chap who sold it said they were rare?
Maybe not but they are tasty. When clean.

As for the squeak the tunnel is a bit intusive I have moved the seat back to give me a wee bit better position so the seat doesn't touch the tunnel?

I think you are right. It seems to be coming from the seat just as much. I might have to get in there with some tools at some point.

Coming from a Seat Diesel, I am seeing scary uses of petrol, expecially as I am really enjoying the V8 smile

I'm not filling up a full tank unless I can help it and I am not calculating my economy.
