For various reasons I am considering a Q7, and wondered whether anyone had spent time in one? Are they the big lumbering monsters that they look like, or do they have the capacity to surprise me?

Ta!

Only a short tootle as a passenger but its a magnificent car, like an A8 on stilts.

I believe there is a Q5 coming. Which is going to fly off the shelves.

I had one for the weekend and yes they are very big but they are lovely to drive, very relaxing and comfortable with a fantastic interior. Not sure i'd buy one for around town but if you do a lot of motorway driving they are great...

Sounds like it's a bulkier version of my A6 then. I happen to love that for relaxed cruising (even at speed) - very comfortable and solid, we just happen to want the seven seats and they don't do those in the A6 any more. frown

I drove a 4.2 one a few weeks ago at one of the A5 launch events and I was impressed how nimble it felt for a car of its size. Your eyes tell you it's going to be a huge, lumbering behemoth of a thing on the road but once behind the wheel it's anything but. The handling is quite responsive and it was a joy to throw into bends - after a while you swear you're in an A3 Sportback! People get out of your way pretty sharpish too. tank

IMO they are quite snug inside, considering the size of the thing. Same goes for the Cayenne, X5 and ML.

Disco 3 and Range Rover are volumous (sp? and/or madeup word confused? ) by comparison

I shall have to check this, as my A6 is big but it feels big inside - very important to those of us of a larger disposition! hehe

I agree about the X5, Tuareg, Cayennes never having the space that you would expect. I always thought that the X5 wasn't significantly bigger than my 3 series inside - and tehn they brought out the X3!

I never understood it tbh Ian. What's the point in having a BIG car that isnt BIG on the inside? If you dont need BIG inside, then dont buy a BIG car. Seems simple to me.

The only Q7 Ive got up close and personal with was in a showroom, and the driver's seat had been wound forward to show how large the rear legroom was (NOT!) and then I couldnt actually get into the drivers seat. Must say something if they have to mess about with the seats?

You could wind the driver's seat all the way back and down in a Disco 3 and still have room to get a small pony in the back seat smile

Totally agree! I'll go have a look anyway, but it looks like the "me sitting behind me" test will have to be thoroughly explored - the A6 passed with flying colours.

I had a Q7 for a week whilst my A6 was in for work, i found it too big and the ride too wllowy whatever setting the air suspension was on. Mind u i am not a fan of soft roaders, on the road, the centre of gravity is too high and the laws pf physics take over. I'd rather have my A6.

Great vehicle but front tyres wear pretty quickly.

That's a common issue for most of the big quattro Audis, I think, especially the diesel ones. Too much weight in the nose gives you understeer and it's tough on the tyres too.

Still love 'em though! biggrin

Voluminous.

Anyway - agree with all on here really.

You're not going to buy one if you fancy a nimble agile sports estate like an S4 or even an A6 Avant 3.0TDi quattro, but the way they drive belies their size.

I'm driving a 3.0TDi quattro Limited Edition spec thing with the off road styling package, and 20" rims.

Suspension set to automatic it does most things I want it to, and set to Dynamic it corners well enough for me to have fun.

The 3.0TDi is the one to go for unless you want to write-off £20000 very quickly on a 4.2 petrol (there is a 4.2TDi V8 available now but at £10000 more than the 3.0 I don't see it being the best seller) and the overtaking is pretty good.

The spec is important.

Make sure you get an SE (leather and 18" wheels), S-line (colour coding and sports seats with leather / alcantara and 20" rims) or Limited Edition (SE with 18" off road styling package front and rear bumper stainless underbody protection, exhaust pipe finishers, side steps, wheel arch and sill trims in mat grey just buy the 20" rims to set it off - see pic) with a technology pack as the minimum spec.

Most will have communications pack with Bluetooth and voice control of audio and sat nav also, and BOSE surround sound is awesome, but it MUST have technology pack for you to buy it(Nav, 6CD, parking front and rear, electric tailgate) and some will also have the catchily named "parking sytem advanced" with the reversing camera which is brilliant.

Do not buy Garnet red. Do not buy cloth trimmed or cars that were cloth and dealer fits leather - it will still be valued as a base model when you try to sell it!

Happy hunting!

Well, as you know, all us salespeople have to be fairly confident at "waffling" on for ages.

Yes - Ian - let us know your thoughts...
