Traditionally BMW M cars seem to have sat somewhere in between the Audi sports models, faster than the S models, but slower than the RS models and neither are launched remotely close to each other so direct comparison is difficult. BMW never had a true competitor for the RS2, nor the old RS4, or the RS6, the M3 is really too late to match up with the RS4 as it's out of production and the RS5 will be a twin turbo V8 that will slaughter the new M3.

If anyone will launch a challenge I suspect it will probably be Mercedes as they as power crazed as ever.

Having said that a BMW 7 series with twin turbo V8 power has been spotted testing, so I could be wrong.
