Hi all, i was wondering if i could get a little advice:

I'm looking for something comfy to commute in, that'll cost me less fuel than what i'm currently driving. I've spied an nice '98 A6, 2.8 quattro, with an lpg conversion, and an auto box. Should have some nice poke on the motorway, but not break the bank when filling it up. Only draw back, is its a high miler - 165,000

What's the 2.8 v6 and transmission like? Do they last forever, or should i be weary of a high mileage? Are there certain things that tend to fail, that i should look for in the service history?

Any help would be most appreciated :-)

Well my friends Mum drives a 1998 A6 Avant 2.4 every day, that's done 160,000mi, it's nice and comfy, but it's definately starting to show it's age. Most likely from washing with fairy liquid or similar the wheels and Dolphin Grey paintwork have done a bit dull, the rear windows are a little dodgey due to many years of doors being slammed hard and the wheel and radio have done very shiny. But still, it's a very comfy car. Just look after it and you'll see many a happy mile. One thing to watch out for during ownership is water in the front passenger footwell, this is caused by leaves blocking a drain under the windscreen, the water then enters the car via the air con filter, it's easy to find and rectify. The 2.8 should be a sweet engine, maybe not the best for fuel economy (my Dad's 2005 A6 Saloon 2.4 is a bit crappy in that respect) but by god it should sound good!
