is that, although I am very keen to get one, the car is already out of date. The new A4 has just been tested with running lights, more A5/6 style interior etc.

The M3 however is current and although I prefer the noise, image and 4wd of the Audi I am considering both...

Thoughts?

Wait.

I know it sounds silly but if you buy an M3 then the new RS4 comes out you will kick yourself. When the new RS4 comes out in a years times test drive both along with the RS6 and see what you prefer.

I've wasted a lot of money by buying something that was 'OK' then upgrading 6 months later to the one I really wanted!

The RS cars are always released towards the end of the mainstream model's lifespan (beginning with the RS2 at the end of the 80s life).

So - although the A4 the RS4 is based on is about to be replaced, it will likely be another 5 years until another RS4 is launched.

BMW release the M cars much earlier in the mainstram model's lifespan, as do Mercedes with the AMG cars.

I tend to look on the RS models as distinct from the mainstream. Thus, in my eyes, the 2002-2004 RS6 is still current even although the new model A6 has been out for a while.

D4 then C7 are due out next.

A new Q5 will be based on the B8.

It's anyone's guess what the next RScar will be...

yes agreed, it's pretty unlikely there'll be a new RS4 until the end of the next A4. Test both for as long as you can. I love my RS4 but I don't doubt the new M3 will be a very, very good car. Is it confirmed yet as to whether there'll be a CSL ?

I have a RS4, to me the latest RS6 looks so similar, would not worry about it becoming dated. As already stated the car is a limited production run ...

RS4 all the way, you have a lot of car for the money and as Andy says a "Limited" edition.

Glasgow Audi this morning - grey RS4 cab being sat in and having the roof demonstrated to blonde yummy mummy and her blonde daughter. In other words, a £60k car that's being purchased on looks alone.

Aside, that dealer had 3 R8s sitting there this morning - one in the showroom and an 07 and 57 sitting outside. Does that signify anything?

Further aside, how can they justify trying to charge £178 to change a battery and £109 for an oil change when they can't even manage to make their MOT computer work. Muppets that wasted my entire morning. Not a happy bunny.

Yes, becase of course good looking women don't like cars for what they are, only how they look, as any fule kno.

Sounds a bit like sour grapes on your part, really, upset that someone that you look down on can afford a nicer car than you can.

Likewise - why would it be a problem if someone did buy a car for its looks?

Buy what you like, reasons for liking a car are solely down to the buyer smile

the RS4 isnt out of date until a new Rs4 is released which is years off. i remember when low mileage B5's were fetching more money at audi dealers than virtually brand new S4's - the RS4 has its own look so the new shape won't change what is in essence the spiritual audi quattro successor - a product in its own right. the fact thay halted production after such a short run really seals its fate as being a cult classic in the making. but i would say the Avant will carry better than the saloon, 4 avants got snapped up from the dealer network this weekend alone.

My thoughts - recently discontinued RS4 v just announced M3 saloon is the only valid comparison for me. New RS4 is years away, M3 coupe was not really an option for me as I needed rear doors for youngster. If I did not have the youngster I would be in a 996TT rather than the RS4 or M3 coupe now.

Current RS4 will hold residuals well (I hope!) as they are so well-regarded in the press, effectively ltd ed and the new one is miles off, also residuals on previous version were excellent. M3 will hold value very well initially but will tail off quickly as supply meets demand and as cars fall into the woes of the extended warranty terms on M cars (somethig that put me off a nearly new prevous shape M3).

So M3 saloon v RS4 - both great cars, I prefer the interior and exterior of the Audi (esp v M3 saloon rather than coupe) and for me the RS4 is the better car as confirmed by all the head to head reviews I read. Yes Evo put the M3 marginally ahead but the area it won on (on limit handling, ability to oversteer) is not something personally I would appreciate as much as the things the RS4 marginally won on - styling, presence, interior, gearchange, steering.

Real world, UK weather performance would be much stronger in the RS4 also, and certainly would do with me behind the wheel!

Either way though you will be pleased with your choice, out of interest if a coupe suits your needs why not a 911 over the M3?

Had a few 911s so am looking for something a bit different and ideally with a bigger boot and seats that can be used by adults. Thanks for all the opinions guys, think'll it'll be RS4 when I can afford to change... as long as there are some nice nearly new ones around.

After a 996tt and a 993tt i have now bought an Rs4..really nice car with great build quality and a very lively car for a reasonably big saloon..i dont think you will be unhappy with the performance or handling or the soundtrack..
