Golf Wheel Bearing

I've been told by 2 of my friends that the wheel bearing on my 2.5 year old Golf has gone (I'd not noticed the noise), but they also told me this would not be covered by the warranty - is this right ? Can't see how a wheel bearing is a consumable!!!

Any ideas of cost of replacement ??

It will be covered by warranty but it may well be tyre noise and not a wheel bearing, which will not be warranty.
