I am conducting a Market Research questionaire for part of a University Project based upon the design of a car part.
For this we are looking into the VAG 1.8 Turbo engine and in particular the recirculating (dump) valve. Which costs £60 + VAT and Fitting.

I would appreciate if you could spare me 3 minutes of your time to copy and paste this questionaire and answer the questions as honest as possible.

Regards
Brad Fincham
Bsc Motorsport Engineering

1 - What car do you Drive?

2 - Do you currently have the OEM recirculating valve fitted?

3 - Would you benefit from this product being serviceable?

4 - Would you agree to have this product serviced at the regular intervals?

5 - What would you expect the product life to be in Years or Mileage?

6 - Please put this in order of importance
A - Cost
B - Styling / Aesthetics
C - Performance
D - Serviceability / Maintenance
E - Reliability

7 - Do you Have and Aftermarket Valve fitted?

8 - Why did you purchase this?

9 - Which Manufacturer / Model did you purchase?

10 - How do you rate this product overall on a 1-10 scale. (10 being the best)

Hi Brad, What uni are you doing Motorsport at? I'm at Oxford Brookes studying it in my second year now after doing a foundation engineering. anyway here are my answers. Chris

1 - What car do you Drive? Audi S3

2 - Do you currently have the OEM recirculating valve fitted? No

3 - Would you benefit from this product being serviceable? Yes

4 - Would you agree to have this product serviced at the regular intervals? Yes

5 - What would you expect the product life to be in Years or Mileage? If it is able to be serviced, then the lifetime of the car, but the current ones, 60,000 miles?

6 - Please put this in order of importance
A - Cost
B - Styling / Aesthetics
C - Performance
D - Serviceability / Maintenance
E - Reliability

E, C, B, A, D

7 - Do you Have and Aftermarket Valve fitted? Yes

8 - Why did you purchase this? It's a metal piston type valve instead of the Bosch Diaphram one in which the diaphram splits and it was thrown in when I bought a lot of pricey bits!

9 - Which Manufacturer / Model did you purchase? Hyperboost not sure of the Model.

10 - How do you rate this product overall on a 1-10 scale. (10 being the best) 8

11 - What do you see as the benefits of an aftermarket valve? Piece of mind that it won't split and that I can service it and maybe it creates better pick up after gear changes but hardly noticable to be honest.

12 - Would you change back to OEM valve if it was serviceable and didnt void your warranty? No

13 - What price would you expect to pay for a OEM serviceable valve? £70 - the Hyperboost would have been £85

14 - Any other Comments? ...

Thankyou for your reply.
Im in my 4th year after placement at Herts Uni and as part of a vehicle engineering module we have to design a new part for a car. And we have chosen the Bosch Valve due to the fact they break quite commonly and cannot be serviced.

Thanks again

And best of luck with your degree

Brad

Hi Brad, do you drive a 1.8T yourself? What drew you to look at this part? It is a shockingly rubbish part.

1 - What car do you Drive? Audi A3

2 - Do you currently have the OEM recirculating valve fitted? No

3 - Would you benefit from this product being serviceable? Yes

4 - Would you agree to have this product serviced at the regular intervals? Yes

5 - What would you expect the product life to be in Years or Mileage? 10/15k between service or 50k+ total life.

6 - Please put this in order of importance
A - Cost
B - Styling / Aesthetics
C - Performance
D - Serviceability / Maintenance
E - Reliability

E,C,B,A,D

7 - Do you Have and Aftermarket Valve fitted? Yes

8 - Why did you purchase this? More reliable than OEM part. Servicable.

9 - Which Manufacturer / Model did you purchase? Forge 007P

10 - How do you rate this product overall on a 1-10 scale. (10 being the best) 9

11 - What do you see as the benefits of an aftermarket valve? See Q9

12 - Would you change back to OEM valve if it was serviceable and didnt void your warranty? Not now I've invested in an aftermarket valve.

13 - What price would you expect to pay for a OEM serviceable valve? £50

14 - Any other Comments? My Forge model uses a metal piston. Not knowing how the OEM valve is made, perhaps the piston is the weak part.

Good luck with it.

Cheers,
Andy

1 - What car do you Drive? a6 avant

2 - Do you currently have the OEM recirculating valve fitted? yes

3 - Would you benefit from this product being serviceable? yes

4 - Would you agree to have this product serviced at the regular intervals? yes

5 - What would you expect the product life to be in Years or Mileage? would go with 60k as well on the grounds of chance of failures, seems logical with timing and other intervals around the same.

6 - Please put this in order of importance
A - Cost
B - Styling / Aesthetics
C - Performance
D - Serviceability / Maintenance
E - Reliability
E, C, D, A, B (assume refering to the DV itself?)

7 - Do you Have and Aftermarket Valve fitted? No, but have considered for its know weak link.

8 - Why did you purchase this? as above

9 - Which Manufacturer / Model did you purchase? n/a

10 - How do you rate this product overall on a 1-10 scale. (10 being the best) n/a

11 - What do you see as the benefits of an aftermarket valve? if i did would be as a more reliable part! would consider a DV from a 225 TT as a replacement.

12 - Would you change back to OEM valve if it was serviceable and didnt void your warranty? yes

13 - What price would you expect to pay for a OEM serviceable valve? up to £100, if it was reliable wouldnt contest it to be honest.

14 - Any other Comments?

hi there.
unfortunately i dont own a 20VT at the moment but might i suggest posting your survey on ClubGTI - www.clubgti.co.uk/forums or Edition38, www.edition38.co.uk/forums and http://uk-mkivs.net/ which are VW clubs and you ought to get quite a good response from them especially mkivs.net as the vast majority will be running 20vt engines.
all are free to sign up to or if you like i can copy a link to this site for you.

it does sound like quite a project and it will be interesting to see the results as there is some debate as to weather recirculating or atmospheric valves are good/bad

Good luck
dave
