Need a bit of advice gents.

Just purchased a 1991 2.3e Coupe, mainly as a run around, however there are 2 jobs I want to sort out, firstly fitting a leather interior, and second an exhaust.

The interior I will just wait till a good used one comes up, but i can't find anywhere to get a nice exhaust, not looking for too loud, just want to hear the lovely 5cyl engine note! Any advice? Also any good forums for these cars?

www.audifans.net covers this era of coupe really well.

Leather interior will be about the £500 mark if you want to salvage one from another car, but be prepared to bid as a lot of folk are after them. The jacquard does wear well. I have had the velour in an 80 quattro and the blue stitch quattro in the current which does wear really well. An upholstery cleaner really does bring it back to life... The leather you will be looking for replacement font and rear seats, door cars and and rear insets.

The B3/B4 coupes do have very good sound deadening and it was also one of the firs tthings i did to mine was fit a full stainless system, nothing lairy just to release some more noise. I opted for power flow but living in the north of Scotland i didn't have a lot of choice. I had a sports cat fitted and 3 silencers and using a 55mm (i think) dia. and a twin tip it sounds nicer. Longlife make a better exhaust (better grade of stainless) and check with an others for which in your area is good. These can be good and bad. Milltek are pretty renowned for making good soundng systems for the 5 banger. and yep the 5 pot does sound nice!

What I'm really looking for is a specialist who deals in these? I'm used to Porsche's and MG's you see, and for those you can go to a number of specialists and buy exhausts off the shelf, and have a choice of them are there any internet specialists? Or even non internet, I don't want it fitting I can fit it myself.

in all honesty powerwise the standard system is acutally pretty good. What are you looking to change overall, the back box or more? Milltek i believe is off the shelf
i would sign up to audifans.net , a lot of guys in your neck of the woods who can advice you better with whats available to install yourslef and nearby... ok not speciifcally wanting to redirect traffic but there is a wealth of knowledge for that speciifc model and era of car.

Mmmm I've spent a few hours on there, I think that is going to be a much used resource.

If the car is a success then it may be sold in favour of a more powerful model, possibly 2.8 or s2 as a daily driver. Not killing another 911 with mileage!

Audifans is very good for the series 3/4 cars. and you will get your mechanical answers there.

The s2 is much quicker than the 2.8 or the 20v. But only ever go for a standard one i would say, as modd'ed ones can be a very big can of worms. Had 2x 2.8q's here and they are a very easy to live with and capable of galactic miles... I have been "allowed" by wife to blow loads of money on a car so going for something a bit more adventurous!

Nice looking car that, how is the power difference, I'm a very smooth steady driver (comes from owning some very powerful twitchy cars!) I tend not to hack steering around, so quite often a big lazy engine is better for me, whats the delivery like on both cars?

v6 is very linear, if anything quicker than it feels. I do a fairly steady 300miles a week, and its a great cruiser, can pick up its heals if needs be. The 2.8 has a dual intake manifold which kicks in at 4200rpm and gives a nice bit of top end when you need it. But is happy to chug with plenty of torque. The S2 has more of both, the later ABY engines will give you 280lbs/ft on overboost and 230bhp. The earlier 3b engine is still strong but 220bhp and 227lbs/ft the extra torque making daily driving a doodle in either car. The 2.8 stock is 174bhp and 184lbs/ft.

but very different cars, s2 has the sportier edge. v6 more suited to cruising. presonally i prefer the easy NA engine both capable of galactic miles.

Hmmm thinking s2 then.

Although if all the S2's were ropey and a nice 2.8 came along I'd buy that.

Assuming I get along with the car!

I've got both at the mo, a 2.8 Quattro Coupe (red one in pic) and an S2 (Green in pic). The 2.8 is great as an every day car, i've had it years and its never missed a beat. Underpowered compared to the S2 but still a v smooth ride from the V6.

Back to the subject tho, I had a custom decat system made up for the 2.8 by MIJ Performance, great job and sound but you'll have to take the car there for it to be made. The S2 already had a Longlife 2.5" system on it but im getting rid of that in favour a 3" for turbo/tuning purposes. As they're obviously older cars now you'll find "off the shelf" systems are harder to get hold of, it may have to be a custom job!

£329 by longlife! Pretty impressed!

I'm going to hold off modifying it for a few weeks as if I end up really liking the car I think I will sell it straight on and buy an S2, I have decided to go S2 over v6.

Its a possibility ya know! I drove a few roads up in yorkshire a couple of months back in a mondeo and even that was fun!

The N/A 5 cylinders sound great but things do get alot more interesting with a turbo! biggrin

as far as the leather interior goes, if you keep the 2.3e i would hold out for an S2 with a leather interior, more common place on the S2's.

Now that i have heard a bit about you and your porsche background i think the S2 is probably a better choice for you. Depends what you are looking, they are targetted at differnt styles of driving. Sporty coupe - S2 cruisy coupe - 2.8
