Contact VW customer services, 0800 711 811- they will be able to tell you if its had a replacement fitted (usually under warranty- there was a recall)

Sorry I don't know how you can tell if it's going. A friend on mine found it difficult to change/select a gear in his 2000 1.4 mpi polo(I think 1st was hardest to get into without it crunching/just jumping in) and then a week or two later he couldn't select any gear and had to have a new pedal box fitted. £200ish inc fitting.

I have a 2001 Polo GTI which is basically the same chassis....

I also have this problem...

The issue was reduced by replacing the gearbox oil and adjusting the clutch cable... But its still there...and more often than not will crunch into 2nd 3rd and 4th...

I suspect the peddlebox is cracked.... Its a common fault on all the polos of that age...

However, (as far as im aware) VW only offer a waranty replacement for the peddlebox in the GTI...On a 1.4L i suspect you will have to pay for it..

If its not the peddlebox, then the next thing im planning to replace is the clutch (Which has done nearly 60K)...Failing that, then its the gearbox thats gone....The GTI expecially has a tendancy of eating gearboxes...
