It depends what you want. What S4 are you looking at? V8 or V6 bi-turbo?
The M3 will certainly be more of a drivers car of the two whilst the S4 will be a much more relaxing drive but still seriously capable in a straight line and around corners.
Go and test drive both of them and see what you think.
