Im considering a TT...
Discussion
Yes, yes get the gayer jokes out of the way already ...
For reasons various (the wife and financial sense if you really have to ask) Im considering part-ex the Grale in for a TT and an A3. The A3 will be a blah blah blah Tdi jobby, but what TT do I go for? Now, obviously it cant be a 150 or 180 BHP jobby because, well...Im just not that gay. So that leaves 225, 3.2 thingy and the Sport jobby at 240.
The sensible option would be a cheaper 225. Plenty still in decent nick, not bad mileage, good spec and quick enough. Slightly more expensive, but surprisingly affordable are some 3.2 and some with DSG. At the top of the price bracket are 240 Sports with the funky seats. Basically are the premiums you pay for the Sport worth it? Is the 3.2 any better than a boggo normal 225 and just how much stick am I going to get from the TVR and Lancia boys?

I had a few mkIs including a 225 and a couple of 3.2 DSGs. To be honest, they are not a patch on the mkII.
In hindsight, the 3.2 is quite nose heavy, but the engine is nice and it is a bit of a hoot in Sport mode.
225 would be the sensible option (ignore the feeble 150, 180 and 190s) and the qs looks silly with the black roof.........unless you have a a black car.
Verdict.......get a mkII 3.2 quattro s-tronic.

Hi,
Coming from your current car to a MK I TT (regardless of engine), I think you'd find it disappointing to drive.
If you can stretch your budget, try the MKII. It's a far better car all round than the MK I.
Don't even need to go for the more expensive 3.2 as the 2.0T is rated as the better car (except for the noise of the V6) by all of the road testers who've driven both.
Otherwise, try for one of the 225bhp S3's before you plump for a MK I.

Depends what you want out of the car. The 225 is a good enough car, has a good well finished cabin, whereas the 240 loses some of the refinement, strips weight out and gives a few more ponies to it. As has been said, the 3.2 is a bit heavier, and doesn't feel as good round the corners as the 225/240. If you want it purely for a decent motorway hack/bit of fun every now and then, then the 3.2 is more than capable. If you prefer something that is a bit more fun, then the 225 is good enough. You can also mod the hell out of the turbo'd cars, with chips taking it up to ~260-270. Ever-so-slightly lower it, perhaps get some of Steve Schwing's Defcon bushes/susp arms and it improves the car no end. Get yourself over to the TT Forum and you'll find all the information you need...
As for lasting well, my '01 225 Roadster has just ticked over 70k and runs well, the cabin is still rock solid, with no squeaks or rattles. Keep it serviced, top up with oil regularly, watch out for the dashpod (Audi FOC replacement so not a big issue), make sure the cambelt's been changed on anything over 5yrs/60k, and it may even put a smile on your face!
Edited to add, I've linked to an older topic which has a few more details about the models/spec's if you're interested. Clicky here

Nice, that. I'm awaiting your in-depth analysis of the dynamic qualities of both in relation to each other. I'm sure you can do a much better job of it than me or anyone else in the trade, seeing as you bought the version with the biggest number on it and all.

I test drove both models at length and made the decision that the 2.0TFSi was a better car IMO.
Cost was not really the deciding factor, as I also had an R8 on order at the time (delivered yesterday btw).
And believe it or not, I test drove that as well and came to the decision that I wanted the R-Tronic model, not the manual.
Now, where's my water wings, the Channel is calling....................
Oh, and don't presume to know me well enough to make the assumptions you did in your last post when quoting me.
