Hey guys, I'm off to look at some Polos this afternoon for the missus to learn to drive in. Anyone got any tips as to what to look out for, any common faults/flaws.

Any help appreciated smile

The GTIs eat the gearboxes and diffs.
A friends (non-gti) one had an exploding steering pump and noisy gearbox.

You'd be much better off with something like this:

what price range you looking at?

pre 92 old and tired now, but should be rust free and cheap to run, tough as nails but basic.

old style 92-99 again are tough as old boots, look out for noisy first gear and basic models that dont even have central locking or PAS.
As a price guide I just sold a one owner 99-S 1.4 5 door for £2k. (44k fsh)

00-02 - much nicer interior than the previous model, also looks much newer, even though was just a major facelift.
Gti 1.6 models sell for £3.5k to £6k and have best spec, or go or 1.4 16v.

02-06 model is a much bigger car than the older Polo, more like a Golf than an older Polo, 1.9 TDi or 1.4 Sport the ones to go for.

Worth buying over Ka/Fiesta/Corsa/Saxo alternatives as so much more metal in the Polo.
