Hi Guys,

I don't often visit the Audi threds but I keep having a problem with the
V6 3.2 in my Audi. It keeps mis firing and Audi have had two tries already at fixing it. Its not even a year old yet!

First time a plug was replaced, second time, two coils and two plugs were replaced and a software update was done after thay had had it for a few days.

Its started misfiring again and they are on their way again.

Do other people have a problem with this engine? Even if they fix it again, I don't feel I could trust it to get me up and down the country any more.

Any comments or ideas?

Thanks

Paul

VAG did have a bad batch of coil packs a while ago (2002 - 2004) but they had largely cured that problem. My 2003 R32 has had 2 coil packs play up, so I replaced the lot just to be safe.

I would insist on a full set of coil packs and plugs for a start, but there may be issues in the ignition wiring loom too for the problem to keep reoccuring.

Kick a*se with the customer service manager at your dealership. You shouldn't have to put up with this. If it continues, you may have a case for rejecting the car but I would get some advice from the CAB first.

Do let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the info,

Engineer who came this time said that oil was getting into no4 cylinder.

It did seem to be using a lot of oil but I was told previusly that 'its normal when new, they use gallons'

Its back at the dealers now for them to have yet another look.

This engine sounds like a bit of a pup!

How many miles have you done with it & how have you driven it?

To bed the piston rings in properly, you need to drive it like a 13 year old on a council estate!

Lots of idling fecks up the cylinder walls with glaze & it will always use lots of oil. Mrs Brisel's A3 2.0 TDI was never run in properly & it uses 1 litre of oil every 2000 miles - not excessive but my R32 has never used a drop between Longlife services.

Selling the car now will really hurt you in terms of depreciation, so do stick with it. How did you get on rattling the customer services manger's cage?

Coil packs are a problem, I think the "Bad batch" is a bit bigger than suggested. If its just loosing one cylinder then I would suggest its another coil, if its a more random misfire then you may have different fault. Problem with coils is this. (technicians piont of view, you guys as customers may disagree)

Car comes into dealer with misfire, droping usually one cyclinder only. Tech checks fault memeory (saves testing the coils manually a risk of electric shock) computer says, cyl No.4 misfire. SO Tech fits coil pack to Cyl No.4 only. Road test all good, Thanks very much.

Customer drive away happy, 'til next friday afternoon, misfire again. Car comes into dealer with misfire, droping usually one cyclinder only. Tech checks fault memeory (saves testing the coils with a bit of luck) computer says, cyl No.2 misfire. SO Tech fits coil pack to Cyl No.2 only. Road test all good, Thanks very much.

'til next month, misfire again. You see where I'm going with this.

Customer believes he has reoccurring fault (gets the arse) when in fact its a different failed component each time, presenting the same symptom.

Warranty only pay for the failed component, so you can only change the failed one. When really if there all starting to fail now, its likely all six need doing sooner or later. If ever your out of warranty and paying for the repair your self, ask them to change the set. But when we ring up and say its either £25 or £150 + Vat + labour, which do you think people go for.

Well, it hurt to cough up the £150 but I did it! What really hurt was that VW UK were prepared to play for the replacements if they went one by one.

Having had one let go at 5pm on a Friday evening when I had 400 miles to drive that weekend £150 sounded better than spending another weekend poisoning my catalytic converters with the emergency engine map & vastly reduced power.

Your point is a fair one though thumbup

My 3.2 V6 TT hardly used any oil between services and I did almost 46,000 miles in it from new and I don't think mine was exceptional.

My R32 used quite a bit in the first 10000miles of its life but since then like other suggest it hardly uses a drop

Hi,

Last time I heard from dealer was late Friday night.
At that point they had gotten permission from Audi to take the head off
and have a good look since it was now smoking really badly.

They are due to contact me with the results on Tuesday.

Luckly, I don't own the car, its a company car. I would still like to get it back in working order some time though tongue out

Hi,
I don't blame you for paying to have them fixed, although audi should have coughed up!
I had the same problem with my r32...driving home in rushour one of my coils packed in, ten miles on the motorway running on emergency mode, until it shut down completely and I had to wait for a AA relay truck for 2 hrs as I wouldn't let them tow me.
Anyway to cut a long story long, the guys at VW were great, not only did they wait for me to arrive for an hour, they also insisted that they replaced the set for free, (because of the faulty batch)........a year out of warranty!
