Apologies if this has already been discussed, but....

Last night I watched the new Clarkson supercar DVD. When he reviewed the R8 he made a comment along the lines of... "it doesn't have the Lambo's V10 and never will...." A while back I heard a rumour at an Audi dealership of a new R8 next year with the V10 shoved in the back confused

Does anyone have a view on whether this is realistic or not? I've been considering an R8 for a while, but thought I might hold out for a V10 version... hmmmm...

Dom.

1. Deffo a V10 on the way.
2. No exact date yet, but I'm told potentially 18 months away.
3. Not sure if it's a derivative of the Lambo V10 from the Gallardo or an all new engine.
4. I'm also led to believe that the V10 will be offered with a DSG box as opposed to the current Lambo sourced R-Tronic.
Can't confirm points 2,3 or 4 of the above, as it was from an Audi salesman wink

Isn't it the 5.2 V10 from the S6 & S8 ?

V10 version will be available, but probably no sooner than end of 2008. Little else is known definitively but its OTR price is likely to start at around the £90k mark and therefore with options be above £100k. I am sure it will be a lovely car to drive, but £100k+ for an Audi is tricky territory. As somebody mentioned previously, they perhaps should have called it an Auto Union..

April 2009 according to the dealer who my old man placed his order with. Known him for about 20 years and he's involved in the development of Audi's for the UK market so should know!

I'd heard rumblings of similar dates from a friend at Audi.

I read that the V10 is going to be entirely new, an evolution of the current V8. Not sure why, but there must be a good reason.

Am I right in thinking that the new RS6 V10 is different to the Lambo?

There seem to be 3 distinct variants (in the Audi range) of the V10. The S6 V10 was 'developed in conjunction with Lamborghini', the RS6 has been very heavily re-worked for forced induction, I don't know if Lamborghini had a foot in on this as they have no interest/experience in turbocharging. The R8 V10 from what I've read (as above really) is an extension of the current FSI V8.

I know of someone who is expecting delivery of a V10 end of 2008oct through dec time apparently deals in supercars and the hire thereof. I have been told to expect del in 09 but not sure when. I believe the car is to be launched in March april ish time in 08. Would make sense to begin build in oct nov and stop production of V8.

I seriously doubt they will 'stop production of the V8'. I have just received my letter and gubbins from the R8 Sales Team within Audi UK, marking out the process leading up to delivery of my car (a V8) at the end of next year.

I can just see the letter when they send it out in a few months;

"Dear Mr X, you will be delighted to hear that we are launching a V10 version of our celebrated supercar, the R8. We will be ceasing production of the current V8 engined car and replacing with our new V10 engined model, this will be priced at a modest £15k more than the previous list price. Unfortunately despite having held your money for the past 2 years you will now have to join the back of the waiting list for the new V10 R8, but I am sure you will agree that it will be worth the wait. Oh, and because the list price is now higher we will be needing a further £1000 deposit to confirm your place in the list. Yours (sincerely) Audi Team UK." biglaugh

On top of the V10 rumours there are even rumblings that Audi will be unvieling a convertible version in Janurary at the Detroit show. I'm only the messenger (so don't shoot me) and the rumour was probably fan boy started, but I have seen it reported more than a couple of times now on various sites.

course, this could be old news on this forum?

Doctord I can only report what i am led to believe. If I am wrong it is going to be a dark day because I will quite probably cancel my order if they continue to produce the V8 alongside the V10. However having said that I cant see how they could produce both as they are apparently at max capacity on the V8 and i cant see them putting another production line in place for the V10 unless rumours of a convertible are true then all bets are off.

I am led to believe that the V10 will be sold alongside the current V8.
Wouldn't do anyone (us or Audi) any favours in residuals if they binned the V8 to bring out the V10.

Indeed. Apparently they were planning to use the RS6 V10, but they couldn't get enough cooling to the engine, with the result being the three mules lost in testing (at least one of which was at the 'Ring), so they're developing the V8.

Why cancel if you are going have a V10? I suspect the V10 will be about an extra £20k and a slightly different market.

If they keep to 25 a day then initally 18 V8's and 7 V10's seems a good way to go makes the V10 rarer

Well to be honest that is probably what it will hinge on for me. If i find that they are producing 27 V10 R8 s per day i think i will cancel my order as I signed up specifically because as i see it its a rival to the G and porsche. Now the G is still sold in fairly low numbers which is good/great however as technically brilliant as porsche may be they are too mass produced for me.I dunno maybe thats why i cant get passionate about them and only the older versions do anything for me.

Also before I am accused of buying a car for the look at me factor yes thats partly true I want a car not everyone has got however I also want a car thats worth the money and I feel that the R8 is where the Lambo to a degree is not due to the fact that you pay 140+ and then it still costs you a fortune to run and requires a new clutch every five minutes which is the opposite in the audi. Sure my decision is money biased but to be honest everything in life is.

I could be wrong but the autoblog ref from docd seems to imply that they will cease production of the V8 when the V10 comes about in accordance with their rs rule as it were.

I can't see them killing off the V8's due to its market position. The 911 is an overall sales success because its affordable in supercar terms (because lets face it not every city boy who buys one knows everything about cars).
To pull out of this segment would make the R8 sales numbers plummet and take it too far into competition with real exotics which Audi just can't compete against in image stakes (wich is where it counts). The V10 has to be a halo model to compete against the GT3s I think.
