A8 4.0TDi buying advice please
Discussion
I bought a 4.2 petrol earlier this year and nearly went for a 4.0tdi, but I do low mileage and have no need for high consumption at a much greater outlay.
So I hear, the 4.0tdi will return c.30mpg on a run (didn't Clarkson get 40mpg on that snails pace run to Edinburgh and back?) and around 18 in town. According to the dealer I bought mine from, the difference in performance is not massive, and the V6 is more refined than the V8 diesel, particularly the 4.0 unit. THat said, I would love to hear what you think of it post test drive. I think my car is fantastic, makes a lovely noise and goes very well. I get up to 29mpg at 75-80mph and have touched 30mpg on long runs at 70mph ish. However, round central London I get around 11mpg in stop start and up to 18 in flowing traffic.
Incidentally, I don't think that mine is much faster than an A6 3.0tdi...

Had a test drive this afternoon and it did not seem as smooth as my V6. Nice car with all the toys, free service package and warranty on it. Not as quick as I thought it would be, sluggish on take off. Jury still out on whether to do the deal or not, still trying to convince myself it is the "right" car for me. Rear legroom did not look as good as my A6 but the air suspension was nice as well as the factory sat nav. I'll keep you posted.

Hmm curious. Test drove one a couple of weeks back, in fact had a mega test-drive as wifey couldn't make her mind up - A6 2.7 and 3, A5 3, Q7 3, and A8 4 V8, horrified me to drive that many diesels in a day! We both found the 2.7 and 3 very slow, whereas the A8 was not only monstrously torquey (second only to the V10 TDi in the Toerag IMHO) but wonderfully quiet - both the 2.7 and 3 in the A6 avants we drove seemed horribly boomy and nasty, though granted they were "smooth" in diesel terms. It seems like our Rangie and previous exec barges I have driven, it rolls off the line in 2nd gear, so it will be gentle on the off unless you either give it a bootful or use the paddles / stick to knock it into sport mode.In terms of leg room, I'm 6'2" and could very comfortable fit behind myself as it were, which I couldn't in the A6 at all! Did you have a good clamber around the back seats?
We're very nearly doing the deal, but then I'm also tempted to save £10k and get a 4.2 V8 petrol, or sod the auto-barge concept entirely and get another M5!
Have a remapped 3.0 in the A6 so that's maybe why the 4.0 felt slow. Had a good clamber round in the back and even a rough measure and could not find a perceivable difference. Perhaps I should hang on until I find a 3.0 A8L, legroom in the back is crucial due to the nature of our business, (see profile) as well as economy. Still debating which way to go. Thanks for all the comments, keep them coming as the dealer is closed until after Christmas anyway.
I have a 3.7 quatt sport at mo and would like a 4.0 or 4.2 D due to fact that i do approx 27,000 miles per year.
I have driven my friends 3.0 D A6 all road which is fantastic and pulls well..
If I went for a 3.0 D A8 long wheel base and re mapped it what effect would this have on the 3's performance compared to the 4 or 4.2..the 4.2's are still pretty expensive as as previously stated plaent of 3' around.
By remapping what actualy does this mean?
Thanks

4.2 petrol A8's are getting hard to fine, certainly under two years old as everyone buys diesel. Apparently the 4.2 diesel destroys the 4.0 diesel but a remapped 3.0 diesel is just as fast and there are loads of them out there.
What I'd be interested to see is a remapped 4.2 diesel... anybody got one?Am a little dubious of re-mapping these high torque VAG motors, for e.g I asked about remapping my own V10 and heard they pop drive train components if high miles are done post re-map. The monster torque produced must just knacker the transmission over time.

Latest Update: Found an A8L 3.0 TDi, well specced, 2006 model, good price at Lincoln Audi. Signed for it today and collect on the 19th, glad I waited. Full marks to the salesman, Chris Doughty, very professional and nothing seemed to much trouble. It was worth the 300 hundred mile round trip.
