Hi all,

bought a 1.6 FSI golf with around 13k on the clock a month ago (it's an early 07 car) as a run around - now it's making intermittent grinding noises at low speeds (maybe the only time it's audible), so far, I've only noticed it in 1st and 2nd gears, but it's still there when the clutch is down fully which rules out what I thought it was (I think at least).

I've had a bit of a google and no joy - it's got over 2 years warranty, so I'll have it back to the dealers at the weekend, but I just wondered if anyone had any ideas as to what it might be in the meantime?

Thanks for any help smile

Hope you get it sorted. And don't give up until it is!!

A list could be long!!

Could be a brake binding issue. A wheel or driveshaft clearance issue. It could be mechanical (gearbox etc..).

Make a comprehensive desciption of what the sound is like (metalic, whining, constant, sound varying, pitch etc..), when it occurs (if steering lock is on / off), is it all the time or intermitant, is it affected by the car being warmed up or not. Does it go away if you put the brakes on.

Really the more info and batter description you can give means the less time they need to spend on it and the quicker you get your car back.

My sister has got one of these, and it seems to like flicking stones up into it's brake calipers quite a lot.

Had the golf back to the garage 3 times before they finally got to the bottom of things, was a combination of... *drumroll* ...

- needed a new steering rack
- had a medium sized boulder between brake pad and disc
- exhaust bracket was rubbing

Now you'd think I'd be annoyed at it having to go back in 3 times to find all these, but they were all different sounds, and all intermittent, and they've all gone now (touch wood smile). The guys at VW Service were nothing but gents - kept me in the loop at all times, really very pleased with them.

Still, a bit of grief to go through for a 6 month or so old car eh smile
