fast a4 diesel ?
Discussion
I am looking for a fast a4 diesel (as we have a skoda vrs & dont want to go backwards!!)
What is the engine model to go for ,its a mine field out there!!!
I want diesel but need at least the equal of skoda (130bhp in small car)
I think i would need about 200 in car that weight/size to equal (so what model is that???
Have about £17k.
cheers lads

hmmm, S4 is a different kettle of fish. I never got the mpg beyond the high-teens.
If you need economy then a diesel is the way forward, but Audi's hold there value - if you are not a high milage driver maybe petrol would be better.
I was going to suggest an A4 3.0tdi, but they are rare and may not fall into your budget.
How about this as a mid-point between the two extremes?

Many thanks ,that is nice, what sort of mpg & bhp are those 3.0 that is petrol i presume? If you need economy then a diesel is the way forward, but Audi's hold there value - if you are not a high milage driver maybe petrol would be better.

There should be plenty of 2.7 TDi's and 3.0 TDi's about?
Both 6-pot oil burners, and generally well reported
Generally better specs too!
Else, you can get the 2.0 TDi 4-pot in a 170bhp flavour too...my wife had one in a Golf GT, and it was as quick in terms of acceleration as the Golf R32 I was driving at the time

The 3 litre diesel A4 goes like feck - loads of torque and tops out at 147 mph as I found out last summer (off the public road, cough). My R32 had a slightly challenging drive keeping up with one carrying 3 pie-eating contest winners somewhere near the A50 in Derbyshire.
And they will still do over 30 mpg driven sensibly.

Cheers for reply, I have £20k which is not enough for a 3ltr diesel (i thought!)but a friend has an 07 plate 6 mths old which he paid £35k for & they have offered him £23k !!! so i am trying to do a deal with him!And they will still do over 30 mpg driven sensibly.
Is that a good buy for £24k ,it has done 10K miles
3.0 diesel is great but onl go for it if you can afford a car with lots of toys as people expect this on a top end model.
2.7 is alright, but again probably too new to get a nice one in budget.
140 and 170 are the same (just a marketing thing really like the 210 and 225 engines) and yes, a remap will be under 500 if you drop me a PM and ask nicely
140 and 170 are both torque restricted heavily by the ECU so they don't blow up the DSG box, get a manual, get a remap and let it off the leash!

What is 140 & 170 ? is this model number ?
What year & what price for one of those? I dont really know what to look for in adds?
The Audi.s have confusing model numbers? Are these ones petrol or diesel?
Sorry to be a pain?????

2.7 diesel is a recent (ie last 18 months or so) direct replacemet for the 2.5. Think its effectively the same engine, just re-worked a bit
The "140" and "170" refers to BHP (well PS actually - but nearly the same thing): the 2.0 TDi engine was released as 140 and intended to replace the older generation 1.9 PD TDi engines which variously came with 130 or 150 BHP. They then released a higher output 170BHP version about 12 months ago.
It does have a lot of shove, but is a bit peaky - my wife had one in a Golf GT, and it was a bit "all or nothing"
must say i would get a quattro if you want a fast desiel to keep all that torque in check. I can also second the 2.5tdi quattro sport, bit older and cheaper than what you are looking at now but certainly goes well.
I would also suggest sticking with the sports setup as well as the quattro, this will make for a more engaging drive. Although the old SE suspension wasnt that bad, you just fell out of the seat on every corner..

2.7 tdi doesn't add any power, but does have a broader spread of torque over the 2.5 and piezo injection improves economy noticably.
Chipping 2.5s is a bit of a grey area, 180BHP is considered by a lot of people the safe limit of the engine. Not sure what a 2.7 will do, bit new still.
