Hi,

I would appreciate some thought on whether I should go for a 3.2 V6 or 1.8T 225 MK1 TT Coupe...

i am not too bothered about fuel economy, more whether it is worth the extra money in purchase price, servicing, etc and the reliability of the 3.2

any opinions out there?

Thanks,

antony

Personally, I'd have a 225 with a few tweaks. Big mid-range torque is very useful in the real world.

3.2 does sound lovely mind and is very flexible. Bodykit and wheels they come with detract from the looks.

225 for me as a £500 remap would take it to 265.

But the v6 does sound sweet though
also if you like dsg you can get it on the v6

yeah DSG is tempting (as is that engine!)...

anyone know of any common problems with the DSG box?
is it high maintenance?

I have yet to hear about any single problem with the DSG box. all i ever hear is praise.

as for engine choice, i would go for the 225 1.8T. The tuneability of these engines is astonding. The 225, a BAM code engine i believe, the same as found is S3's and some Leon Cupras comes with a KO4 turbo and a simple remap and a couple of tweeks will see you knocking on the door of 300 very useable and reliable horse power. If you wanted to go very big, you can, for not really that much money...

have a look here for chips - http://www.goapr.com/Audi/products/ecu_upgrade_tt....

or here to go silly - http://www.goapr.com/Audi/products/stage3_225tt.ht...

The 3.2, as found in the R32 and newer S3's is a lovely sounding and solid engine but tubneability is limited in N/A form. Although if you have the money, a single or even twin turbo setup is avaliable which gives collosal power but prepared to pay for it.

FYI the new S3 has a 2 litre turbo in it...

Sorry to say but i think you may be mistaken on the car tax mate:

I think the "hypertax" which will be placed on high emmitting cars is only on the new ones. As far as I know the tax on my 4 litre car will only be going up by 20 quid in April.

Just a quick side issue if you guys could help. My girlfriend is looking at buying a 225 bhp tt in the not too distant; now say if I were to chip this up to the 260ish bhp region and "forgot" to divulge this information to my insurers, would they be able to tell the difference when they pick up the pieces?

if you dont insure your mods, you aint insured.

prison isnt a very nice place to visit, so ive heard....

if you cant afford to insure the extra, you shouldnt be driving a performance car imo

an ECU remap is usually 'invisible' - the only way to tell they're there most of the time is to wedge your foot into the carpet. This is difficult if the car is already parked halfway up a tree.

However, any modifications should be declared to your insurer.

My Dad runs an insurance accessing business and can "smell" a modified car from miles away. Your not covered and its as simple as that. The extra that it would cost to cover the modifications is very little nowadays. For example, Bluefin on a Focus ST is only an extra £30 a year through most insurers. Its not worth the risk IMHO.

yeah it was more of a "how can you tell?" question than a "this is what I'm gonna do question".
I'm not a massive one for modifying cars as I don't feel I would do something to a car unless I fully understand it, which with chipping I am not 100%.
Thanks for the info
And as for you jumping straight down my neck saying "if I can't afford to run the car, don't run the car"; get a life! This is a friendly car forum where people who are in the know (you lot) can share some of that knowledge with us lessers (me), if you don't feel like playing nicely don't play at all! rolleyes
