mk5 gti advice please
Discussion
thinking of getting a red mk5 gti, 3dr, leather, 6cd, new bluetooth, 55K miles, £13,100 from a vw dealer.
Is this a good price.
Have sold a 993 for economic reasons and am slightly concerned about mpg but absolutely love the gti drive. Does anyone have any experience of GTI compared to 2l TDI 170bhp?
thanks

GTI, is a great car, i have one and have come from Porsche ownership, very much a different ownership proposition. To be honest i have not driven a Golf TDI, but i know the GTI mpg is not the best from personal experience, but then the car only gets driven round the suburbs.
22-26mpg.
Hope this helps.
ps 13k sounds a bargin to me, but dont take my word for it.

13k for a GTI that hasnt been to the moon an back is certainly a bargain, some nice options aswell.
My GTI does around 29MPG around town and I had 43 mpg out of it on a run the other day down the M6/A14.
The TDI wont be anywhere near as much fun when blasting but will offer a very sound drive with grunt followed by grunt and cruising ability.
Test drive both and see which you like the best!

I've had a GTi Edition 30 and my wife has had a Golf GT 2.0TDi 170:Is this a good price.

I am a huge fan of the GTi - and that one seems like a bargain at £13,000 with only 55k behind it.
It seems well specced too - leather is a very expensive option when new, and so not that many come with it...
Fuel consumption can be poor (forced induction), and it will never match an oil-burner in that respect.
My wife's 2.0TDi 170 had lots of go - I remember thinking that its lower-speed in-gear acceleration was as quick or maybe quicker than the R32 I was running at the time...but as you can probably guess: it was a bit all or nothing
Overall I'm still not a huge diesel fan, but it seemed like it was one of the better ones...?
Overall I'd always have the GTi - its far better looking too!
Best bet would be to drive them back-to-back to be sure.
I'd go for the GTI at that price- stick your neck out and get them to take another £300 off.
I'm running a 140 Tdi 2.0GT just now, having also tried the 170. TBH there wasn't that much differnce between the two.Great drive for a diesel but can be quite noisy.
Ultimately - It's performance V economy with less performance.

The MkV Gti is a great car. We have a red one too. You other guys must drive like your hair is on fire. Ours averages 33-34mpg on std unleaded (super recommended I think). Does 40mpg on a boring run, 30mpg under uber thrashage. Much better feedback and driving experience than the Audi TT it replaced.
13k sounds cheap for a MKV - make sure you get a nice warranty. Also check the fit of the door seals - 3 door models had a few fitment problems.

thanks chaps, bought the gti. Didn't bother driving the diesel in the end. I've driven the 140 golf and a3 sportback and knew each time i got in them i'd be regretting not getting the gti.
porky is going tomorrow, golf being picked up next weekend.
Couldn't move on the price as had already done pretty well (£400 off and added tax, bluetooth and tyres).
very excited, guess i'll have to change my alias now

I too came from a Porsche (968) to a GTi, eventually. I started out a bit non-plussed by it, but it has got under my skin a bit. I am pondering swapping it for a 993 oddly enough, but the GTi is such an easy car to live with, I don't really want to get shot. MPG is poor - around 20-25mpg for me but I have a short, busy commute and I jhust can't help spinning the turbo up. Gets above 40mpg on long runs. The great thing about it is that it feels like a sports car - the driving position, steering feel and feedback is not far from how my 968 felt, and I doubt the GTi is an awful lot slower in most situations. I think you will enjoy it. I shouldn't comment on the price, probably cheap for the UK though. Mine cost about that new...

Obviously I'm not sure what you'd define as "uber thrashage"
...but I've managed 14mpg average on one drive (ok, 70% m'way, 30% NSL A road) On the second part of that journey, all NSL country roads, I didn't break into the 20's at all, until the m'way on the way home
Admittedly, this is easily my record driving the gti! The fuel economy/performance balance in "normal" driving is very good I'd say, 30+mpg easy.Edited by thepickle on Friday 11th January 22:01

As you know, it’s totally pointless screaming around at high revs with this engine, the low down torque is where the fun is, as you say, it was holding onto the revs on a clear m’way for quite a distance that really killed the average mpg. It was a bit of a one-off scenario where all the relevant factors came together as you’d want them to and it became a bit of a "what’ll it do?" moment. I was a bit surprised how bad the mpg could be...but it's just one of those things it’s fun to do once, just to see, and then it’s done with

Yeah, I suppose any car would be extremely bad on the mpg in a 'flat out' run.
