My TT, which has been on Audi Variable Servicing since new, says it is due for its next service in 700 miles. The car was last serviced last summer, 9,000 miles ago. All my previous services were done at roughly 19,000 mile intervals (at 19K, 38K and 57K). Why would the service interval drop so drastically when I haven't changed my driving style?
Could it be because the independent garage where it was last serviced possibly didn't use long-life oil?
A bit confused...

Sounds like they've set it to fixed (12 months/10K servicing.)

To be perfectly honest, once it's started to collect a few miles fixed is the way to go IMHO.

From what i understand only a VAG dealer can reset the service interval display for longlife regime whereas with time and distance you can do it yourself.

I would guess that your dealer hasn't reset it correcty and the car has reverted to time and distance regime ie. 10K or 12months.

More likely that they don't have the correct equipment to reset the service indicator, so did it manually from the dashboard which means it will be 10K. Simplest to just reset it yourself for another 10K. Instructions are in the handbook.

p.s. People keep telling me that they don't trust the longlife service and I should switch to fixed, and I keep telling them it'll be fine, synthetic oil is up to it and they look at me like I am deluded and I shrug and carry on, and the miles keep ticking up (112K at time of writing, aiming for 250K)

If you are only doing 10k a year it may drop your service intervals down.

As has been said they have just reset it to standard 10K fixed servicing, ask them what oil they used when they did the last service it is in the handbook what it should be for the VAG oil or the equivalent branded oil.

Would it be worth getting an oil change done annually with the MOT anyway?

Personally if you do lots of motorway miles the long life stuff is good, but I personally would not leave it until the service reminder try doing it a few thousand miles before, saying that modern engines are capable of running like this with tolerance to spare so take your pick but I would not use it on a higher performance engine diesel or petrol.

Good advice here... if the garage did reset the service indicator to annual/fixed, then they may have not put longlife 503.01 oil in. So if you do decide to just reset the indicator it would be on my mind to do at the very least, a fluid change as well.

I had the very same issue a few years ago and took it back to the garage to drain and put right as I'd paid and been invoiced for an Audi AVS.
