1999 A6 4.2 gearbox - reverse issue
Discussion
hi all,
seems my 1999 A6 4.2 has developed an intermittent reverse gear niggle. its not too serious at the moment but if anyone has any sugestions or thoughts it would be good to hear them,
it feels like its not quite engaging the gear and then feels a little juddery as if the gear is slipping, closest thing i can liken the initial feeling is almost like trying to reverse whilst riding the clutch too much in a manual car.
spoke to fontain who basiclly sucked their teeth and said new gearbox probably ... not that helpful.
would a flush and oil/magnet change make much difference or does it sound fubar'ed ?
thanks ..

Maybe not that helpful sounding, but you'll very likely need either a brand new gearbox or a refurbished one by someone that really knows their onions.
Auto boxes on all the V8s of that vintage are known for first and reverse selection issues sadly. An oil change may delay the inevitable for a short while but there is no work around for this one.
