Hi guys what is your honest opinion! £22 k for car, need to seat 5 of us (only on short journeys) dont know what to go for 3 series bmw or a4.Dont know what engine yet cross that bridge later. I like rear wheel drive & dont think i can afford quattro as i want the new shape audi (is it s line, about 2005 onwards?) or new shape beamer.
any you guys had same prob?

Hi, I have had spells in both in the last year or so.

£22k is plenty to get you into a quattro, esp if you consider nearly new. I thought the Audi looks better and has a nicer interior. But the BMW had a nicer engine and was more spacious. The current A4 really is a bit narrow, hence why I had to move into an A6.

Hope thats a start point for you.

I buy and sell both models and both are good, If buying an Audi A4 I would go for the 2.0 tdi sline 140 (avoid quattro unless you need 4wd, kills economy and performance) if you are spending your full £22k get one with as many options as you can find , On the Bmw I would go for the sport model,(se doesnt feel as nice) 2.0d is ok but 3.0d 6cyl is a belter, £22k will be tight on a 3.0d sport but do-able if you find one carrying a mile or two.. given the choice of 2.0d bmw and 2.0tdi I would pick the Audi.

sline and sport both have firm suspension and lower profile tyres so a I would have drive in both as the ride isnt to everyones taste.

I run a 3 series diesel and have for the last year , but would argue that the Audis are built better.

all imho.

We have both, the BMW has more room in the back and the Audi has a bigger boot.
The thing I don't like about the BMW is that the steering is heavy and the gear change is notchy and stiff. Even in 15000 miles it's got no better.

2 ltr audi sounds good or the bigger bmw engines if i can afford one! I am buying 2nd hand but want the new shape audi or bmw. I did want a diesel but i am not high miler & diesel seemed to have got out of preportions for the extra mpg unless you are doing loads of miles. so petrol ok now.
Trouble is she has a skoda fabia vrs & the thing goes like "hit of a shovel & uses hardley any fuel! WHAT A CAR THEY ARE!But it has got a bit small as the damn kids keep growing! So after something like that but bigger.

I'd go with a 170 A4 - the 140 is a bit underpowered for an A4 especially with an auto box

it's fine for an A3

agreed about the quattro comment - currently running around in an A3 quattro and I'm getting 10 mpg less in comparison to my FWD A3 and with only 140bhp it's not as if you need it to get the power down

Go for an A4 3.0 tdi quattro - more than enough torque to make drivetrain losses a bit of a non-event wink

You will find an S-line in/around that money with no problem.

I nearly brought one of mate as dealer offerd him £24 k for it on 56 plate all extras with 18k on the clock. But i a mate told me £22k which i had enough but cant stretch any more so thats of!
I might just get a 1.9 & save some money (seen them for £15k with low mile) I know they are front wheel drive but we dont race it about all the time so!!
The only thing is when you look at the for sale ones its hard to know if they are 140ps or 170ps & i want the 170!!
You have to ask them & some dont seem to know!!!

IIRC ask them to look at the back of the car - if it has a red I in TDI then it's the 170
