Hopefully will get a reply from this thread as the last one re: servicing got ignored cry

I am due to buy a 1.8T A3 and may contemplate a remap in the future.

The car is a year 2000 150bhp model.

I have heard of revo which I believe for my model year would bring the bhp to 190 and 225 Torques.

The question is does anyone have experience of this remap or can recommend other companies which can push the magic 200bhp out of this engine?

If you want 200 bhp you need to uprate the K03 turbo to a K03 S (Sport) found on the later engines with DBW and VVT.

You will most likely find 190 bhp may be higher than they actually achieve as these engines are restricted by the turbo and heat as well as not being able to flow enough air.

In the long run the K03 s upgrade would be the cheapeast and best option to reach 200 + bhp, it will cost you circa 800 - 1000 on parts including the map, labour on top this could be less if you can source a low mileage K03 s for less than £300.

Good luck and HTH

Don't get too hung up on the numbers, it's the way it drives that matters. I am sure there will be a big improvement over standard but if you think you might want more, you should perhaps by a later 180bhp model to begin with rather than messing around swapping turbos etc. Just a thought. Good luck.

That is the other option check the engine code AUM is the one you are after and it started in 2001 some rare cases I have seen a 2000 with this engine.

For info they will map to 210-220 straight away no mods apart from the map.

marctwo - changing the turbo is not to difficult trust me a few bolts and oil lines and job done.

Thanks for the info guys

I am just testing the water, as its the wifes car and ££££s are in short supply we will probably leave it standard for the moment.

You are right eveen 30bhp more would drive completely different I imagine.

made a far bigger difference than i expected to our 1.8T A6, its the torque delivery which is quite mad. The TC struggles and with it off spins pretty heavily in the first few gears but on the move the extra torque makes it a much more drivable, let alone quicker car.

My only negatives would be FWD does struggle to contain it low speeds, unless you get a RR session remap and stop the delivery being so brutal when it spools up.

Age old one as well, make sure the car has no faults before you start, as if there is anything iffy it will become immediately apparent. Hoses and leaks being the most apparent of which.

I don't doubt it but I'm not sure how easy it would be to sell on afterwards though and insurance might be an issue.

Very easy it is a bolt on job can revert it to the standard map bobs your uncle, as for insurance I have been modding VW's for over ten years and my policies have always been competitive even compared to standard vehicles.

I would go with one of the more reputable tuners:

Jabba Sport
MRC Tuning
Custom Code (JBS)

some others do do remaps, but of the download in your work's car park type thing. Quite hard to get them back when you have wierd boosting or fuel issues.

+'s - better drive, quicker, 0-60 5.5s, 0.4-1.2 leptons in no time, just as good if not better MPG.

-'s slight depreciation over standard car, but worth it for the fun! biggrin

Agreed on Jabba even though they had a rough patch and some dodgy overboost mapping for a while, JBS / custom code not bad but would not touch the company due to the owner, MRC heard nothing but good things just a shame they are a one shop outfit.

Revo, APR, superchips are all names to take a look at as well because as much as I agree with your statement regarding mapping the car on the road to your driving style, this is still offered by the others such as REVO and APR with the stage 3 programs they have which are mapped to your cars mods such as downpipe's intercooler CAI etc.

At the end of the day in 99% of the case they are based on a base map and then tweaked to your driving style rather than having a map specifically designed for your car so to speak.

nothing I know of with this engine as standard, even the ibiza struggles due to the amount of rubber they have to use, best I got was 5.9 with no back seat, spare wheel or passenger seat and perfect conditions on road legal tyres.

My A3 does it. It was timed with some timing gear based on GPS/G-force in the car. Can't explain it, but I was impressed with the figure. Something like 5.58. I know it's not magazine rig type gear, but it's better than a watch and a mate.

K03s and pretty much all the mods to make the best of it. 60 in second too (which the S3 doesn't do IIRC).

Yes, now you mention it Revo and APR do spring to mind. IMO they aren't included in the "remap in the car park" type. I just forgot them! smile

No worries I believe they can do it in the carpark but try to avoid it these days, I heard of a couple of instances of lost connection whilst downloading software which is just what you want on your ECU.

I'm just surprised as I've seen numbers for a remapped S3 around 6s. I know the S3 won't get to 60 in second so I guess that must lose you around 0.5s or so. Have you had your car dyno'd? What did it make?

It was mapped at Jabba, got 242bhp and 240lbft. No 4WD losses (not sure how much this would be), just me in the car (200kg lighter than S3 too), empty fuel tank etc.

Another recommendation for Jabba..
I had a VW "Golf in a Frock" with the 1.8T engine (Came with KO3S). It was dyno'd many times during the process of tuning. Before map the power delivery was surprisingly erratic (Not uncommon with some VAG maps apparently). Sometimes it went well, others not so, and the dyno showed this. Anyway, it put out a best run of 174bhp. Other runs were generally lower. Should have been 150bhp as standard.
After mapping it popped out 228bhp consistently, and with no other mods at all. It drove brilliantly and was 100% reliable. I sold the car over a year ago, but to my knowledge the car is still going well.
The KO3S is still a tiny turbo. But its quite a bit better than the regular KO3. Either way, these engines are really tough and can take a beating. Its verging on rude not to get these engines mapped smile
