Hi all,

Its now only 2 weeks til I get my licence back woohoo after my period of ill health and I have seen what seems like quite a nice one of these that just fits my budget.

Just wondered if anyone on here knew of anything I should be looking for when going to view?

I'm sure that with a bit of research you will be able to find it but here are some rough details;

95N, 110K, FVAGSH, Mot till june, taxed til Apr, all previous MOTs, last serviced Oct 07,it would seem to be in very good nick from the pics. Its not a quattro.

It has had the cambelt done at 77k & in Oct 07 along with the cam follower. Thermostat changed in Oct as well.

Thoughts/advice/things I should be wary of?

Glad to hear your fit and well again... why the 2.6 out of interest? Audi avants i love em... 1.9tdi for diesel economy, 2.0 16v for okish everyday, S2 avant 4wd and a turbo lots of fun and probably simular mpg to the 2.6E.

Thanks for your glad tidings, laser but I didn't buy the car in the end having looked at it today.

I won't name exact faults (in case the guy lurks on here.) but it needed a fairly costly part and he wouldn't reduce the price of the car enough.

Shame, when my mate (happy now, Julian!!) drove it, it felt really nice and he seemed like a genuine guy but with the cost of the part I'd have been paying full price for it and there is no way I do that on a used car, especially one that basically need £300 spent on it.

Oh well, onto the next one.frown

FWD will see typically about 5 mpg better off than its quattro counterparts. Will also be a little bit quicker in a straight line, unless it greasy. The2.6FWD in good health will give you about low-mid 30's. I only know of one S2 driver who regularly gets 30+MPG, but if you after and avant the S2 is a cracking car, finding a standard one can be challenging! There is a buyers guide here, although for a coupe much applies. http://www.s2-audi.co.uk/tech_articles/buyers.htm esp for the 5 pot turbo. The S2 comes in trwo guises just to confuse! The 3B-220bhp and the ABY-230bhp, the ABY is considered the better unit and offers a hell of a lot more torque on overboost. Also a 6 speed box and appeared about 93 from memory. but there is a lot more to look out for in either of these.

The 2.6 ABC engine is 150 bhp, the 2.8 AAH is 174bhp and has a dual intake manifold so gives a switch over at 4200rpm to give you shorter tract for the air flow and revs well and spits out more top end. there is a lot of info here www.12v.org on both Audi's early V6 engines. I have owned 2 2.8 quattros, very reliable and capable of galactic miles, boy in serbia with a 2.8 coupe passed 700,000km last year! Very little available in the way of engine tuning for either the 2.6 or the 2.8 the breathing is poor and ported throttle bodies, air intake will improve things a lot. other than the usuals. The S2 has endless tuning options.

-The Vee's are a little heavier on the front suspension so top mounts and front suspension can take a hammering. 2.8 gets slightly bigger brakes, but they are adequate for road use but will struggle when you push it.

-Fuel lines are mild steel and corrode. Often replaced for plastic or microbore. So check for fuel smells or have a quick look underneath, they run under the drivers side. although the 80 shapes are galvanized it doesn't mean they are immune to rust, But the body work if look after will last and last. just inhibit it a bit better.

-Front wings and around the doors tend to get bubbled, but tap the body work , can be rock solid underneath.

-airbags came from 94 onwards, options tend to be a little better on the V6's, shoudl have ful electric pack.

-headlights are notoriously poor.

- oil hungry, changes every 5k by the book. They generally have a bit of tappet chatter but the noise should go once its warm, 1-2 minutes. Valley gasket prone to leaking and leaving black spots on drives, an arse to get to.

-accelerator pedal rubber is also known for collapsing, can be a pain, but plentiful sparesw are still about.

The 2.6 in quattro avant form is pretty rare, the 2.8 a little more common.

Dont be to caught up in mileage, if well looked after these will easily breeze past 200k but the average would be about 120-150k for most cars at the moment. Although some go well past that. Generally these are pretty solid cars, worth waiting for a good one, as there are a good few of them about.
