I have a Mk4 Golf GTi PD150 Anniversary which has recently acquired a clonking noise. It appears when either gently letting off or getting on the throttle and is at the moment only really noticeable at the bottom end of 5th/6th gear speeds, when everything is quiet and unstressed.

I can feel it through the throttle pedal, and hear the clonk.

It’s been suggested this could be a CV joint failing. Any other suggestions or experiences?

Engine mounting
Gearbox mounting
Exhaust
CV joint
Anti-roll bar rubbers
Anything worn or loose on suspension
Etc....etc....

As it's a MK4, the likely ones are top mounts - equally though a CV or ARB bush could be on the way out. Jack the car up and lift the wheel up and down - does it feel as if there is play before the string starts to compress/extend?

Top mounts - engine or suspension leg?

Front ARB bushes were replaced a little over a year ago, so I would think that's the least likely. Thanks for the suggestions; I'll get my hands dirty on the weekend!

Suspension - GSF ones are rubbish quality so buy genuine if they're gone.
